Over the past several years, cats have been fast replacing dogs as the number 1 family pet. The cat show halls feature all breeds in all their varieties of beautiful colors. The most striking of these color blends are the cats with coats of orange and black, some with the addition of white. These colors are not only of special attraction to the eye but are steeped in mystery, legend, and lore. Although there are many books about the purebred cats, there are very few about calicos, scientifically known as the tortoiseshell-calico cats. This book specializes in only these colors, their history, their legends, and their facts. Not only is the tortoiseshell calico a color breed of its own but a color of many breeds of cats. Just as the paint and palomino horses are color breeds, so is the tortoiseshell-calico cat; she deserves her own place as a color breed, as well as a color within a breed.

It seemed like a simple job—guide Josh and Sarah to Bow Ridge to live with their aunt until they reached their 18th birthday. It was what their aunt Rebecca wanted, and the best choice Calico Ramsey thought he could make. But someone wants them dead, which makes no sense to Calico. Neither do the feelings aroused by the nearness of the handsome young man from Chicago—feelings that seem to be returned.

Joel Chandler Harris was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Harris wrote novels, narrative histories, translations of French folklore, children's literature, and collections of stories depicting rural life in Georgia. As fiction writer and folklorist, he wrote many 'Brer Rabbit' stories from the African-American oral tradition. He realized the literary value of the stories he had heard from the slaves of Turnwold Plantation. Harris set out to record the stories and insisted that they be verified by two independent sources before he would publish them. The stories, mostly collected directly from the African-American oral storytelling tradition, were revolutionary in their use of dialect, animal personages, and serialized landscapes. 1. The Uncle Remus Books — Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings (1881) — Nights with Uncle Remus (1883) — Uncle Remus and His Friends (1892) — The Tar-Baby and Other Rhymes of Uncle Remus (1904) — Told by Uncle Remus (1905) — Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit (1907) — Uncle Remus and the Little Boy (1910) — Uncle Remus Returns (1918) — Seven Tales of Uncle Remus (1948) 2. Mr. Thimblefinger Series — Little Mr. Thimblefinger and His Queer Country (1894) — Mr. Rabbit at Home (1895) — The Story of Aaron (So Named), the Son of Ben Ali (1896) — Aaron in the Wildwoods (1897) 3. The Novels — The Romance of Rockville (1878) — On the Plantation (1892) — Sister Jane (1896) — Gabriel Tolliver (1902) — A Little Union Scout (1904) — Shadow between His Shoulder Blades (1909) — The Bishop and the Boogerman (1909) 4. The Shorter Fiction — Mingo and Other Sketches in Black and White (1884) — Free Joe and Other Georgian Sketches (1887) — Daddy Jake, The Runaway: And Short Stories Told After Dark (1889) — Balaam and His Master and Other Sketches and Stories (1891) — Evening Tales (1893) — Stories of Georgia (1896) — Tales of the Home Folks in Peace and War (1898) — The Chronicles of Aunt Minervy Ann (1899) — Plantation Pageants (1899) — On the Wing of Occasions (1900) — The Making of a Statesman and Other Stories (1902) — Wally Wanderoon and His Story-Telling Machine (1903)

This anthology is a compilation of Westerners’ accounts of their visits to Korea, originally published in books or newspapers before the country opened its doors in the late nineteenth century. The opening of Korea made it possible to explore the country in detail and write detailed accounts. Prior impressions were garnered mostly from brief visits to remote islands along the coast. The accounts published here are mainly anecdotal, and contain many generalizations. However, the accumulated impressions of these early encounters surely influenced the perspectives of later travelers, and help explain the overwhelmingly negative image of Korea that Western governments harbored at the time. The book can serve as a useful resource for studying Korea’s early interactions with the outside world, and will give readers an idea of the criteria by which Westerners judged the foreign “other.”

From a national bestselling author and “one of the superstars of western romance” comes a wild romp about a fiery woman who meets a very cool customer (Affaire de Coeur). Maggie O’Roarke knows how to walk, talk, and fight like a man. So, when her uncle wills her some gold and silver mines, she’s determined to prove she can operate them on her own—even as her wedding date approaches. But when her betrothed is kidnapped just before the wedding, Maggie is convinced dastardly saloon owner C. V. McCready is making a desperate bid to keep her from re-opening the mines. McCready is a con man who could charm the shine off a saddle. But when he sees Maggie in her wedding finery, he becomes determined to protect her from less savory men who want to swindle her out of her property. And what better way to protect her than to kidnap Maggie and claim her in a marriage by proxy? Turns out there are a lot of better ways . . . In this rollicking read from “a superb storyteller whose remarkable talent for recreating the West will hold you enthralled,” the battle of the sexes is about to be fought with no rules, no prisoners—and no small amount of laughter (RT Book Reviews).
