Su materia narrativa procede de la literatura oriental, pues traduce fielmente el texto árabe del Kalila wa-Dimna , que a su vez es la traducción que el iraní Ibn Al-Muqaffa hizo al árabe del texto en el siglo VIII (de donde se difundió por toda Europa), y éste por su parte procede del Panchatantra hindú (hacia el año 300 d. C.)

Calila y Dimna son los nombres de los dos lobos que protagonizan esta colección de historias indias. El libro es una versión castellana medieval del clásico oriental titulado Pañchatantra [Los cinco libros], mandado traducir por Alfonso X «el Sabio» alrededor de 1260. Esta recopilación sánscrita se tradujo primero al persa, después al pehlevi y luego al árabe, de donde pasó al castellano y, de ahí, a las otras lenguas europeas. Es la obra narrativa india más importante, no sólo por la difusión que tuvo en la India, sino también por sus numerosas derivaciones. Las historias de este libro se han reescrito innumerables veces y han pasado al teatro y al acervo popular. Se trata de una sucesión de narraciones elaborada con el procedimiento conocido como «cajas chinas», en el que hay cuentos dentro de otros cuentos. Tenía por objetivo la enseñanza de la ciencia política y las normas de moral común, especialmente las reglas de conducta para la vida y para el trato con los demás. Hay muchas historias basadas en el tema de la amistad, de su valor y de las formas de reconocer a los amigos verdaderos. Es, pues, un libro de intención didáctica o doctrinal. Sin embargo, la simpatía de los personajes que intervienen en en las narraciones, la variedad de historias que incluye y la gran originalidad de las mismas hacen de este libro una lectura muy interesante tanto para niños como para mayores. Calila e Dimna es, junto con Las mil y una noches, una lectura prácticamente obligada para la gente culta y, desde luego, muy recomendable por el placer que proporciona.
