La presente obra reune varios artículos escritos por Shedd entre 1888 y 1889 en torno a los debates sinodales en la Iglesia Presbiteriana del Norte de los Estados Unidos. Dichos debates giraban en torno a la posibilidad y la conveniencia de enmendar los Estáandares de Westminster con el fin de actualizar y modernizar la posición doctrinal de la iglesia. Shedd presenta una defensa calculada y comprehensiva de la teología de Westminster y, a la vez, pone de relieve la naturaleza y el propósito de los credos y las confesiones. “Los credos,” nos dice Shedd, “constituyen la sustancia del cristianismo en la forma de fe ... y son el enunciado inmediato de la fe de los hombres.” Con esto Shedd afirma que los credos y las confesiones no son documentos que reflejan valores pasajeros que han de ser actualizados con regularidad, sino que son expresiones de una fe viva, duradera e incambiable.
