Catalogue comprising eighty five pieces (oils, sculptures, ivory pieces and other graphic material) created by baroque master artists from Andalusia (Spain) and Mexico and that are part of diverse Mexican private and public collections: Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Museo del Carmen, Museo Franz Mayer, Museo Soumaya, Museo Nacional de Arte and others as well as pieces from the holdings of the Museum of the Cathedral of Seville and the art collection of the University of Seville. "This catalogue we present today is a complement to the exhibition "The Baroque Roads between Andalusia and New Spain" (Our translation)."--Page [7]. The exhibition included a homonymous international seminar held Nov. 18-19, 2011 at the Museo Nacional de San Carlos in Mexico City. This fine edition comprises the participating papers, a collection of essays that deal with the influence of the Andalusia artists who immigrated to the territory of New Spain and that constitute on the most part, the origin of the Mexican School of Painting. The authors explore the baroque iconographic forms that emerged in Andalusia in the 17th century and were later adapted in Mexico through alternative art proposals that spanned to the 19th century.

"If catastrophe is not representable according to the narrative explanations which would ‘make sense’ of history, then making sense of ourselves and charting the future are not impossible. But we are, as it were, marked for life, and that mark is insuperable, irrecoverable. It becomes the condition by which life is risked, by which the question of whether one can move, and with whom, and in what way is framed and incited by the irreversibility of loss itself."—Judith Butler, from the Afterword "Loss is a wonderful volume: powerful and important, deeply moving and intellectually challenging at the same time, ethical and not moralistic. It is one of those rare collections that work as a multifaceted whole to map new areas for inquiry and pose new questions. I found myself educated and provoked by the experience of participating in an ongoing dialogue."—Amy Kaplan, author of The Anarchy of Empire in the Making of U.S. Culture

Baroque New Worlds written by Lois Parkinson Zamora and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

Baroque New Worlds traces the changing nature of Baroque representation in Europe and the Americas across four centuries, from its seventeenth-century origins as a Catholic and monarchical aesthetic and ideology to its contemporary function as a postcolonial ideology aimed at disrupting entrenched power structures and perceptual categories. Baroque forms are exuberant, ample, dynamic, and porous, and in the regions colonized by Catholic Europe, the Baroque was itself eventually colonized. In the New World, its transplants immediately began to reflect the cultural perspectives and iconographies of the indigenous and African artisans who built and decorated Catholic structures, and Europe’s own cultural products were radically altered in turn. Today, under the rubric of the Neobaroque, this transculturated Baroque continues to impel artistic expression in literature, the visual arts, architecture, and popular entertainment worldwide. Since Neobaroque reconstitutions necessarily reference the European Baroque, this volume begins with the reevaluation of the Baroque that evolved in Europe during the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth. Foundational essays by Friedrich Nietzsche, Heinrich Wölfflin, Walter Benjamin, Eugenio d’Ors, René Wellek, and Mario Praz recuperate and redefine the historical Baroque. Their essays lay the groundwork for the revisionist Latin American essays, many of which have not been translated into English until now. Authors including Alejo Carpentier, José Lezama Lima, Severo Sarduy, Édouard Glissant, Haroldo de Campos, and Carlos Fuentes understand the New World Baroque and Neobaroque as decolonizing strategies in Latin America and other postcolonial contexts. This collection moves between art history and literary criticism to provide a rich interdisciplinary discussion of the transcultural forms and functions of the Baroque. Contributors. Dorothy Z. Baker, Walter Benjamin, Christine Buci-Glucksmann, José Pascual Buxó, Leo Cabranes-Grant, Haroldo de Campos, Alejo Carpentier, Irlemar Chiampi, William Childers, Gonzalo Celorio, Eugenio d’Ors, Jorge Ruedas de la Serna, Carlos Fuentes, Édouard Glissant, Roberto González Echevarría, Ángel Guido, Monika Kaup, José Lezama Lima, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mario Praz, Timothy J. Neobaroque In The Americas written by Monika Kaup and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-07 with Literary Criticism categories.

In a comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of modern and postmodern literature, film, art, and visual culture, Monika Kaup examines the twentieth century's recovery of the baroque within a hemispheric framework embracing North America, Latin America, and U.S. Latino/a culture. As "neobaroque" comes to the forefront of New World studies, attention to transcultural dynamics is overturning the traditional scholarship that confined the baroque to a specific period, class, and ideology in the seventeenth century. Reflecting on the rich, nonlinear genealogy of baroque expression, Neobaroque in the Americas envisions the baroque as an anti-proprietary expression that brings together seemingly disparate writers and artists and contributes to the new studies in global modernity.

The Persistence Of Presence written by Bradley J. Nelson and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-01 with History categories.

The Persistence of Presence analyzes the relationship between emblem books, containing combinations of pictures and texts, and Spanish literature in the early modern period. As representations of ideas and ideals, emblems are allegories produced in a particular place and time, and their study can shed light on the central cultural and political activities of an era. Bradley J. Nelson argues that the emblem was a primary indicator of the social and political functions of diverse literary practices in early modern Spain, from theatre to epic prose. Furthermore, the disintegration of a unified medieval world view left many seeking the kinds of deep knowledge that could be accessed through symbolic pictures, increasing their cultural significance. In this detailed examination of emblem books, sacred and secular theatre, and Cervantes' critique of baroque allegory in Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda, Nelson connects the early history of emblematics with the drive towards cultural and political hegemony in Counter-Reformation Spain.

Technically speaking the novel uses the first person and begins with one traditional narrator changing to two to finally sublime into pure dialogs. It is the story of two eternal lovers both on their way from the time before time into the time beyond life, beyond time, beyond the beyond, into their eternal time of two souls in one being. The protagonists are the Haitian Eve Renée Marguerite Dorleac, born Hirsch, and the Colombian Nicolás Rubén Jaramillo Sarmiento during their common and intensive moments in Europe. Both belong to a land of magic where they exist above and apart from reality. Both are possessed of each other and are protected by a set of wise and benevolent loas called Rada. The key years of the pilgrimage are 1968, 1988 and 2008.
