Nel secondo volume di questa autobiografia Doris Lessing racconta molte storie di sé e molte cose della sua vita, dal dopoguerra fino ai primi anni '60: essere madre single; essere artista; l'ambiente intellettuale di sinistra; i problemi di denaro; la psicoanalisi; l'avversione per la madre; i viaggi in Spagna, Francia, Unione Sovietica e Rhodesia. Ma è soprattutto la storia di Lessing amante, di Lessing comunista e di come sia arrivata a considerare - e a rifiutare - sia l'amore romantico sia la rivoluzione socialista, da lei stessa definiti patologie fatali. Nel 1949 Doris Lessing approda trentenne in una Londra grigia, fumosa, devastata dai bombardamenti, povera fino alla miseria, lasciandosi alle spalle due matrimoni e i primi due figli. Dalla calda Rhodesia porta con sé Peter, cinque anni, figlio di secondo letto, e il dattiloscritto di L'erba canta, il suo primo romanzo. Londra rappresenta l'uscita dall'ambiente provinciale e ultraconservatore della colonia. Ma vivere in Inghilterra all'inizio degli anni'50 non è certo facile per una giovane mamma sola, soprattutto se, in pieno maccartismo, si professano idee e si frequentano ambienti di sinistra, con la difficoltà di sbarcare il lunario e con la determinazione, il desiderio e la convinzione di essere una scrittrice. Così, i ricordi di una vita sensazionale si intrecciano a quelli di un sensazionale periodo storico, e la rinascita di una nazione e di una città, provate dalla guerra ma vincitrici e orgogliose, trovano eco nella costruzione dell'identità letteraria, politica ed esistenziale di una donna straordinaria, che si racconta con ammirevole schiettezza.
