Excerpt from Campaigns of Curiosity, 1894: Journalistic Adventures of an American Girl in London When, a little over a year ago, I arrived in London with a star-spangled banner in my pocket, I had no intention of remaining long enough to make any extensive experiments in the line of the "newer journalism." I had only "taken a run" over to England to visit Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's, and the Tower, expecting then to return home and write up my "impressions" of London and Londoners. "Don't forget that you are an American, and are going to England simply to compare the inferiorities of that country with the superiorities of your own." This was the parting injunction of a certain American editor when I left New York. For some time after my arrival I not only never forgot that I was an American, but I took particular pains that nobody else should forget it. I waved the Stars and Stripes on every possible occasion, and sighed for an opportunity to defend my country. It was not long in coming, for I had been in London but a little over two weeks when Mr. Rudyard Kipling's criticisms of America appeared in the Times. My patriotic outburst, which I headed "An American Girl's Reply to Mr. Kipling," was printed in the same paper a few days later, and Uncle Sam sent me his congratulations across the water. That was the beginning of my journalistic career in London - a career that has not been without its pleasures as well as some very hard work. In the early 1890s American journalist Elizabeth L. Banks became an international phenomenon through a series of newspaper articles aptly titled "Campaigns of Curiosity." Following the lead of pioneering woman journalist Nellie Bly, Banks gained notoriety through undercover assignments as a "stunt girl." Disguising herself in various (and often hilariously inappropriate) costumes, Banks investigated and made public the working conditions of women in London. Writing from the perspective of an unrepentant American girl, she explored and exposed a variety of employment, ranging from parlor maid to flower girl to American heiress. Through her writings, Banks demonstrated the capability of women for positions in newsrooms and other traditionally male journalistic spaces to which women sought entry. For her efforts, which originally were only to support her while she made attempts at serious journalism, Banks became the subject of poems and songs and acquired instant fame. Originally published in 1894, this autobiography offers insights into the development of women journalists and the cultural discourses and subsequent rhetorical practices of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Banks's autobiography is one of the few--if not the only--complete works of 1890s women's stunt journalism in print.

Elizabeth Banks entered London at the height of the Victorian age. A young girl from New Jersey, her journalistic writings captured the spirit of England and those who lived there. Rather than simply observing how the people of London lived from afar she immersed herself in the world of the London poor, working side-by-side with them and speaking to them directly as they worked. Adventures of an American Girl in London is the fascinating result of her brilliant research into nineteenth century London. During her time alongside the working classes she becomes a servant, being employed by some extremely tough matrons, then as a crossing sweeper, a flower girl and as a laundry girl. At the other end of the social scale Banks also posed as an heiress seeking social advancement from established gentlemen in Britain. The received answers to her advertisements demonstrated the grasping nature of some men, clawing after this heiress's American dollars. The Specator, at the time of the books release, stated that "Miss Banks is capital reading." The Pall Mall Gazzette wrote "Her strange, wild and curious adventures are the common theme of conversation in thousands of English homes." Elizabeth Banks was an American journalist, who moved to London in 1892, and became a pioneer in the field of immersion journalism for women. Although she never renounced her American citizenship, she remained in England throughout the last forty years of her life. She died in London in 1938. Adventures of an American Girl in London was originally published under the title Campaigns of Curiosity: Journalistic Adventures of an American Girl in London in 1894.

True accounts by domestic servants though a century and a half of British history revealing what their lives were really like—includes illustrations. Step into the world of domestic service and discover what life was really like for these unsung heroines (and heroes) of society. Between 1800 and 1950, the role of servants changed dramatically, but they remained the people without whom the upper and middle classes could not function. Through oral histories, diaries, newspaper reports, and never before seen testimonies, domestic servants tell their stories, warts and all—Downton it isn’t! You’ll read about revenge on a mistress with a box of beetles; the despair and loneliness of a fourteen-year-old maid; the adventure of moving to London to go into service; and an escape from an unhappy home life—as well as the “servant problem” and how servants found work; how National Insurance began to improve their lot; the impact World War I had on domestic service; and what was done to try to make the occupation appealing to a new generation. Praise for Michelle Higgs’ previous books “Enjoyable and well-written social history.” —Who Do You Think You Are? “Daily life is recounted with both historical detail and sympathy, aided by numerous first-person accounts.” —Your Family Tree
