This manual provides guidelines for the nomination of sites in Canada to the List of Wetlands of International Importance. This action is taken in accordance with the articles of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (the Ramsar Convention) to which Canada is a full party. The guidelines are needed to assure that nominations for listing of sites in Canada are consistent with Convention criteria & obligations, and to allow mechanisms for appropriate review of proposed site nominations. The manual begins with background on the Ramsar Convention and concludes with the Canadian Wildlife Service policy statement for site nomination. The appendix contains: the criteria for designating Ramsar sites along with the long-term target that the Convention has for each; the Ramsar Convention classification system for wetland types; and a list of Canadian Ramsar sites.
