This report adopts a scenario-based approach to help better understand the forces impacting Canada's energy environment and to address the uncertainties & issues associated with evolving energy markets. It examines two distinct scenarios of Canada's energy future for the public to consider: the supply push scenario, in which technology advances gradually and Canadians take limited action with respect to the environment; and the techno-vert scenario, representing a world in which technology advances rapidly and Canadians take broad actions with respect to the environment & the accompanying preference for environmentally friendly products & cleaner-burning fuels. Projections are made for energy demand in total and in the residential, commercial, industrial, & transportation sectors, plus non-energy demand for hydrocarbons; and for energy supply (production and supply/demand balances) in the electricity, crude oil, natural gas liquids, natural gas, and coal sectors. This report projects energy supply and demand for Canada to the year 2035. It includes a Reference Case, with baseline projections based on the current macroeconomic outlook, a moderate view of energy prices, and government policies and programs in place at the time the report was prepared. It is considered the "most likely" outcome for Canada's energy future, given the underlying assumptions. In addition to the Reference Case, the report considers four sensitivity cases to provide a broader perspective and reflect the uncertainty around energy prices and economic growth. The four sensitivity cases are referred to as the High and Low Cases (for high and low prices) and the Fast and Slow Cases (for fast and slow economic growth). The following chapters discuss the key factors influencing the Reference and sensitivity cases, highlighting key changes in Canadian energy supply and demand trends. The detailed data tables supporting this discussion are available in the Appendices on the NEB website.
