The mandate of the Industry Table was to develop a broader understanding of the challenges & opportunities facing Canadian industry in responding to climate change, and to evaluate a range of options for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the context of the national implementation strategy related to Canada's Kyoto Protocol commitment. This report reviews results of the Table's work, focussing on practical actions that are believed to have real long-term potential to tackle the GHG issue and maintain Canadian competitiveness. It begins with an overview of GHG emissions in Canadian industry, achievements of industry in GHG emissions reduction, challenges & strategic considerations facing industry in GHG reduction, the international dimensions of the Kyoto Protocol, and a framework for assessing competitiveness impacts. Section 2 sets out key themes & messages from the Table's work. Section 3 summarizes reports of sub-tables regarding GHG emissions reduction measures in the following industry sectors: upstream oil & gas, petroleum refining, industrial chemicals, minerals & metals, transportation equipment, other manufacturing, small & medium enterprises, and the forest industry. The final section draws overall conclusions and presents the Table's recommendations. Appendices include minority opinions, analyses of linkages to issues being considered by the other Tables, and an outline of principles governing the Industry Table's work.
