"Though the Paralympics are the third largest sporting event in the world, they don’t always get their due—and so, in advance of the upcoming Paralympic Games (scheduled for summer 2021 and winter 2022), this book invites children to discover and celebrate the sports movement, through the impressive achievements of some of Canada’s Paralympic stars. Chantal Petitclerc, Benoît Huot, Alison Levine, Ahmad Zeividavi and many others tell us about their journeys as athletes, challenges they’ve faced along the way, and insights into the particularities of parasports. Created in collaboration with the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Amazing Athletes promotes the Paralympic movement that continues to change perceptions of excellence, diversity and disability around the world. A book for kids and adults alike, it is an invitation for readers (with or without disabilities) to discover new role models and be inspired to reach new heights of their own. Canada is internationally recognized as a leader in men's and women's hockey - but in 2006 Canada had yet to conquer the world of sledge hockey, the Paralympic version of ice hockey played by athletes with a physical disability in the lower part of the body. The Canadian Men's Sledge Hockey team came into the 2006 games as underdogs. Yet, through determination, guts and guile, they overcame all obstacles to win gold. [Fry Reading Level - 4.7

While athletes can experience poor mental health, researchers often focuses on the personal factors that impact an athlete's mental health. Such a narrow focus neglects the broader contextual factors, such as involvement within sport systems, that can impact athlete mental health. The purpose of this project was to understand how elite sport training environments in Canada impact the mental health of athletes. Team Canada Olympic and Paralympic athletes (n = 32) from team and individual sports (water polo, basketball, rowing, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, and field hockey) each participated in one semi-structured interview. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.
