Water quality guidelines and objectives are used by Canadian provincial, territorial, and federal agencies in their efforts to assess water quality problems and to manage competing uses of water resources.The guidelines in this document contain recommendations for chemical, physical, radiological, and biological parameters necessary to protect and enhance designated uses of water (drinking water supply, recreational water quality and aesthetics, freshwater aquatic life, agricultural uses, and industrial supplies). The guidelines apply only to inland surface waters and groundwaters. The rationale for each parameter is included to assist in the development of water quality objectives to suit local water conditions. Parameter-specific background information and a glossary are included.

This report describes the development of Canadian water quality guidelines for the nitrate ion for the protection of aquatic life. It contains a review of technical background information on the chemical & physical properties of nitrate & nitrate salts, the nitrogen cycle, natural & anthropogenic sources, fate & behaviour of nitrate in the environment, nitrate environmental concentrations, and effects of nitrates on aquatic organisms (including fish, plants, invertebrates, and semi-aquatic mammals & birds). The final section sets out nitrate concentration guidelines to protect fresh & marine water quality and aquatic life, and provides guidance on the application of the guidelines. Appendices include tables that summarize freshwater & marine toxicity studies.
