Nell'estate 2006, il Premio Nobel per la letteratura Günter Grass rivela nella sua autobiografia di essersi arruolato, diciassettenne, nelle SS. Lo scandalo dilaga, disseppellisce vecchi rancori, chiama in causa i nomi più noti della cultura tedesca. E come un'onda di marea riporta alla luce il panorama sommerso e accidentato dei rapporti tra intellettuali e totalitarismi in Europa. È legittima infatti la domanda: e i tanti Günter Grass italiani? All'indomani del fascismo anche l'Italia piombò in un gorgo di odio, rivalità e tradimenti in cui l'imperativo categorico era rinfacciare i trascorsi altrui all'ombra della dittatura prima che venissero denunciati i propri. La guerra all'ultima delazione infuriò sulla stampa, come nella corrosiva rubrica "Caccia al fascista" inaugurata dal "Borghese". Nelle università, dove il ritorno dei professori ebrei cacciati dal regime fu accompagnato da amarezze, ingiustizie e polemiche. Nelle aule parlamentari, dove il passato brandito come arma nella lotta politica non risparmiò neppure le figure più illustri del Pantheon antifascista. Per sottrarsi all'epurazione, l'unica via fu cancellare le tracce, con strategie diverse poi perpetuate e raffi nate per decenni. Negare l'evidenza. Truccare i calendari. Sublimare il passato nelle opere artistiche del "dopo". E lamentare all'infinito la propria "generazione perduta", smarrita, incosciente. Sulla scorta di un ricco tessuto di citazioni e confronti, Pierluigi Battista analizza la malattia di un dopoguerra che, contrapponendo un passato da demonizzare a un presente mitizzato, ha impedito all'Italia di assimilare la "metamorfosi collettiva" dal fascismo all'antifascismo. Inserendo la vicenda del rapporto negato tra intellettuali e regime in un quadro storico-politico più ampio, contribuisce a spiegare una ferita che ancora oggi lacera l'Italia. Per dissipare la cappa di silenzio che avvelena il rapporto degli italiani con la loro cultura e con la loro storia.

[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

This book offers the first comprehensive analysis of the role of cinema in the communication strategy of the Italian Communist party (the PCI). It examines the entire period during which the party had a systematic and organized approach to cinematographic production, starting with the early experiments in 1946 and concluding with the closure of PCI film company Unitelefilm at the end of the 1970s. Its analysis sheds light on a range of issues, such as the relationship between the party and Italian intellectuals, the Stalinist imprint of the Italian Communist Party and the historical significance of the Salerno turn, the PCI’s relationship with the student movements in 1968 and 1977, and the PCI’s response to the rise in political violence in the 1970s. Ultimately, the book demonstrates that cinema was essential to the PCI’s propaganda effort.
