Quedan ya pocos ejemplos en España (casi siempre en núcleos de población dispersos y de difícil acceso) en donde sigan interpretando colectivamente composiciones líricas tradicionales; quizá sólo canciones y romances que se dicen o se cantan con motivo de ocasiones muy particulares: la vendimia, una festividad concreta o la llegada del mes de mayo. Sin embargo, se ha perdido o está en trance de perderse, por motivos diversos, la tradición de interpretar colectivamente otras canciones (de bodas, de siega, de quintos) que tuvieron una pujante vida años atrás. Las transformaciones sociales, los nuevos medios de comunicación, los cambios de constumbres o la mejora de las vías de comunicación han influido en esos cambios en los modos de expresión colectiva.Salvo en esos casos mencionados, y quizá alguno más aislado, la poesía lírica de tradición popular ha quedado reducida a determinados juegos infantiles -algunos de los cuales se siguen ejecutando también en las ciudades- y aquellas canciones que los niños aprenden en la escuela, un aprendizaje que, de algún modo, desnaturaliza la transmisión de esas composiciones. En La voz de la memoria, su autor ofrece una completa serie de estudios sobre el Cancionero Popular Infantil, en los que atiende tanto a los tipos de composiciones -y a su singularidad- que forman parte del mismo, como a aspectos más partiuclares: la caracterización literaria de ese Cancionero o su presencia en la escuela.
