Jawa bagian Tengah, khususnya poros Kedu Selatan-Prambanan, pernah menjadi bagian dari Kerajaan Mataram Kuno abad IX-X Masehi. Lingkungan tersebut merupakan wilayah yang ditandai dengan sederetan gunung api, beberapa perbukitan, dan menghampar dataran kaki gunung api yang cukup luas, dengan sumber daya alam yang memadai schingga memungkinkan terbentuknya pemukiman masyarakat abad 1X—X Masehi yang dekat dengan candi. Pemilihan lokasi di lereng gunung api, dataran, dan perbukitan untuk mendirikan candi sebagai ruang sakral menunjukkan bahwa para pendirinya memiliki kemampuan mencari dan mengenal komponen-komponen sumber daya alam yang bermakna sakral atau dimaknai sakral. Di tengah-tengah heteregonitas ruang yang luas di wilayah poros Kedu Selatan-Prambanan, manusia membutuhkan orientasi, pengkiblatan diri dalam beraktivitas. Mengacu pada teori semiotika dari Ferdinand de Saussure dan Roland Barthes, candi dan lingkungannya dipandang sebagai seperangkat tanda yang terangkai dalam susunan tertentu membentuk sistem tanda yang terstruktur. Fenomena lingkungan candi adalah sebuah seperangkat tanda yang dikonstruksi oleh pendirinya dan dipahami maknanya oleh masyarakat pada waktu itu sebagai ruang sakral dengan makna simbolis kosmos. Sistem tanda ruang sakral candi dan lingkungannya didukung sumber prasasti dan naskah merepresentasikan beberapa konsep makna ruang sakral.
