Candice Lin?s art explores marginalized histories, colonial legacies, and the materials that link them. She invokes and interrogates volatile themes through a research-based practice, giving them a sensuous reality through substances like tobacco, opium poppies, bone-black pigment, and lard. More resonant and pungent than usual art materials, her artworks seep and spill?and in this, they evoke the unruly stains of the exploitation, migration, and disease they reference. Her exhibition, experienced through the ears, nose, and skin as much as through the eyes, calls up centuries-old racialized traumas that still have uncanny and urgent meaning today.0Candice Lin: Pigs and Poison is published on the occasion of a significant commission and touring exhibition of the same name. Lin?s title refers to the nineteenth-century trade in Chinese indentured laborers?disparagingly called ?pigs??and to opium, or ?poison,? which in the same period was imported by the British to China and used as both a commodity and a mechanism for controlling the workers who became addicted to it.?00Exhibition: Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, Aotearoa/New Zealand (08.08. - 15.11.2020) / Guangdong Times Museum, Guangzhou, China (20.03. - 16.05.2021) / Spike Island, Bristol, UK (05.02. - 08.05.2022).

Candice Lin A Hard White Body written by Lotte Arndt and has been published by Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Art categories.

This publication showcases A Hard White Body, an evolving project by Candice Lin presented at Bétonsalon--Centre d'art et de recherche, Paris; at Portikus, Frankfurt/Main; and at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, University of Chicago. A Hard White Body weaves together material and nonhuman histories alongside the life and work of three historical figures: American writer James Baldwin (1924-1987); French explorer and global traveler Jeanne Baret (1740-1807); and artist and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). Lin uses porcelain, a material whose history includes nineteenth-century imperial and scientific uses, to highlight fantasies surrounding whiteness and purity, only to subject her porcelain assemblages to pungent organic materials. She thus stages processes of contamination between organic and inorganic materials, creating an unstable sculptural ecosystem. In addition to an essay by curator Lotte Arndt that discusses the various iterations of Lin's project, the publication features an essay by Rizvana Bradley; a conversation between Jih-Fei Cheng and Mel Y. Chen; and a conversation between the artist and C. Riley Snorton. These texts are accompanied by a visual essay by the artist and a selection of exhibition views.

A 2010 Human Rights Commission report found that Asian people reported higher levels of discrimination than any other minority in New Zealand. K. Emma Ng shines light onto the persistence of anti-Asian sentiment in New Zealand. Her anecdotal account is based on her personal experience as a second-generation young Chinese-New Zealand woman. When Asian people have been living here since the gold rushes of the 1860s, she asks, what will it take for them to be fully accepted as New Zealanders?

Lin's richly tactile installation meditates on the upheavals of 2020, drawing on complex material histories and speculative multispecies narratives This book chronicles the creation of a newly commissioned body of work by Los Angeles-based artist Candice Lin (born 1979) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lin often investigates the legacies of colonialism by tracing the material histories of goods that circulated within global trade routes. For her Walker Art Center and Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts project, the artist brings together hand-dyed indigo textiles, plaster sculptures to be touched by visitors, large-scale ceramics partially inspired by Chinese tomb guardians and a hallucinogenic video featuring dancing cats and spam texts. Taken together, this multipart installation addresses the anxiety, isolation, fear and anger of this tragic year of pandemic and social upheaval, emphasizing touch, intimacy and a collective questioning of our precarious present and future. Texts explore Lin's innovative use of materials and mediums and the theoretical frameworks that animate her art. A fully illustrated plates section documents the artist's process of research, making and installation, and an annotated selection of Lin's major past exhibitions provides important context for works made over the last decade.

Planetary Specters written by Neel Ahuja and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-20 with Science categories.

Neel Ahuja tracks the figure of the climate refugee in public media and policy over the past decade, arguing that journalists, security experts, politicians, and nongovernmental organizations have often oversimplified climate change and obfuscated the processes that drive mass migration. To understand the systemic reasons for displacement, Ahuja argues, it is necessary to reframe climate disaster as interlinked with the history of capitalism and the global politics of race, wherein racist presumptions about agrarian underdevelopment and Indigenous knowledge mask how financial, development, migration, and climate adaptation policies reproduce growing inequalities. Drawing on the work of Cedric Robinson and theories of racial capitalism, Ahuja considers how the oil industry transformed the economic and geopolitical processes that lead to displacement. From South Asia to the Persian Gulf, Europe, and North America, Ahuja studies how Asian trade, finance, and labor connections have changed the nature of race, borders, warfare, and capitalism since the 1970s. Ultimately, Ahuja argues that only by reckoning with how climate change emerges out of longer histories of race, colonialism, and capitalism can we begin to build a sustainable and just future for those most affected by environmental change.
