Der Band untersucht das Genre erstmals eingehend in seinen komplexen und vielschichtigen interkulturellen Auffächerungen, die sich in nationalspezifischen Western-Variationen finden. Er eröffnet interessante Perspektiven auf diesen film- und kulturgeschichtlich kaum erschlossenen Bereich. Ein Schwerpunkt gilt den verschiedenen nationalen Western-Varianten in Osteuropa. Beiträge von Spezialisten aus Polen, Tschechien und Russland arbeiten bislang unbekannte Übereinstimmungen und Differenzen im Gebrauch des Genres in den damals kommunistischen Ländern zu Tage. Deutlich wird dabei u.a., dass das ideologisch als anrüchig betrachtete, aber beim Publikum sehr beliebte Genre vor allem in Russland und Polen über die Intervention der Regierungen dazu diente, sowohl Kapitalismuskritik als auch Überhöhungen der eigenen Nationalkultur zu inszenieren. Darüber hinaus beinhaltet der Band auch Texte mit neuen Perspektiven auf den deutschen Western sowie auf Western-Variationen im französischen, britischen, australischen, indischen und afrikanischen Kino. Auch die vielfältigen Verbindungen zwischen Western und Eastern werden u.a. anhand internationaler Koproduktionen beleuchtet. Der Band betont die Vielschichtigkeit und Komplexität der interkulturellen Transformationen des Western, die sich von Europa über Lateinamerika und Afrika bis nach Australien und Asien nachweisen lassen. Dabei wird herausgearbeitet, wie Western-Elemente in sehr unterschiedlicher Weise zur Geltung kommen, um nationalspezifische Kulturmuster und Kommunikationszusammenhänge zu verhandeln.

O fenômeno do cangaço "independente", que começou na segunda metade do século XIX e durou até cerca de 1940, tendo sido extensamente estudado por diversos autores. No entanto, boa parte destas obras é de caráter basicamente narrativo e por vezes, escrita em linguagem quase literária. O historiador Luiz Bernardo Pericás foi além da constatação desta lacuna bibliográfica. O resultado desse trabalho é agora publicado pela Boitempo no livro Os cangaceiros - ensaio de interpretação histórica, no qual analisa as bases históricas e a atuação dos grupos do cangaço, como aqueles chefiados por Antonio Silvino, Sinhô Pereira, Corisco e Lampião. Para o historiador João José Reis, "há tempos precisávamos de um livro que fizesse um balanço exaustivo do que se escreveu sobre este fascinante fenômeno social e cultural do Brasil no século passado. Luiz Bernardo Pericás revira uma vasta bibliografia sobre o cangaço para estabelecer uma certa ordem, e um método, na discussão e compreensão do mundo de Lampião e outros cangaceiros... O livro eleva a análise do cangaço a um patamar superior e serve como inspiração para se pensar outros tipos de banditismo, inclusive nos dias que correm". O tema - já retratado de forma literária por autores como Graciliano Ramos e José Lins do Rego - é desenvolvido à luz de uma abordagem multidimensional, que toma a estrutura agrária sertaneja "como um forte elo entre a base econômica mais ampla e a superestrutura", mas não se atém somente a uma interpretação economicista, investigando outros níveis para traçar um quadro complexo do banditismo rural nordestino. Como aponta na orelha o também historiador Lincoln Secco, na história do Nordeste brasileiro "o cangaço apareceu como a forma pela qual se moviam as contradições típicas de uma sociedade formada por populações errantes, pobres e vitimadas pelo mandonismo local e marcada pela instabilidade".
