Context activities and cultural partecipation trends in Italy: a wide-angle snapshot of basic data and statistics illustrating the activities of the ministry and other public and private entities working to protect Italy’s heritage and promote culture. This booklet presents synthetic data concerning production, protection and promotion of culture in Italy. The figures refer to the previus year(unless otherwise specified) and have been provided by the National Statistical System, the General Directions and Central Institutes of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC) as well as other reliable and sound sources. Despite all efforts to ensure a systematic and balanced presentation of the data, some imbalances persist due to differences in survey methods and the lack of permanent informative exchanges between institutions. However, we hope that, although very concise, this publication will provide basic first-hand information to observers and researchers and allow the public at large to assess Italy's extensive cultural heritage as well as other social and economic aspects that accompany the growth and dissemination of culture.

This volume contains the texts of six papers delivered by internationally renowned scholars during a three-day conference held in Florence in October 2008 in celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the publication of Horne’s celebrated monograph on Botticelli. Rom erlebte in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts und in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jahrhunderts tiefgreifende politische Umbrüche und ökonomische Krisen. Gleichzeitig prägte es als Kunstmetropole wie kein anderer Ort die europäischen Künstler und Kunstszene sowie den Kunstmarkt zwischen Klassizismus und Romantik. Hier studierten die jungen Maler, Bildhauer und Architekten antike und nachantike Kunstobjekte. Sie bildeten sich bei den zeitgenössischen Künstlern fort und nahmen im gegenseitigen Austausch kreativ Impulse auf. Auf dem in Europa rasch an Bedeutung gewinnenden freien Kunstmarkt trieb gerade der schier unerschöpfliche römische Sekundärmarkt (Handel mit Kunstobjekten, die sich auf dem Markt befinden), zu dem auch der Handel mit Antiken gehörte, auch den Primärmarkt (Handel mit „atelierfrischen“ Objekten) an. Der Tagungsband nimmt dieses lebendige und pulsierende Kunstgeschehen in den Blick. Er untersucht Produzenten, Agenten, Verkäufer und Käufer, widmet sich Verhandlungen um Preis und Wert und stellt auch die Frage nach dem Einfluss von Künstlern und Käufern auf die Produktion und Rezeption von Werken Bildender Kunst.

I Comitati Nazionali per le celebrazioni e le manifestazioni culturali sono istituiti e sostenuti dal Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali grazie alla legge n. 420/1997. I Comitati, che nascono su proposta di istituzioni, di Università, di enti locali e personalità del mondo della cultura, hanno il compito di promuovere e realizzare eventi e manifestazioni che ricordino i grandi protagonisti ed avvenimenti della storia e della civiltà italiana. Negli anni, essi si sono qualificati come strumenti operativi particolarmente efficaci per produrre cultura, ampliare la base partecipativa delle iniziative culturali, determinare concrete acquisizioni scientifiche, ottimizzare le risorse finanziarie e favorire una sempre più ampia ricaduta sul territorio, conferendo a determinati eventi un adeguato rilievo ed un riconoscimento istituzionale da parte della Pubblica Amministrazione. I Comitati sono caratterizzati da una attività basata sulla collaborazione operativa tra diverse componenti culturali e istituzionali del Paese; in tal modo hanno creato preziose occasioni di approfondimento e di divulgazione dell'opera di un poeta, di un musicista, di un letterato, di uno scienziato, di un artista, attraverso progetti condivisi di ampio respiro e rivolgendosi sempre con particolare attenzione ai giovani e alla Scuola. Dal 1998 al 2008 il Ministero -Direzione Generale per le Biblioteche, gli Istituti Culturali e il Diritto d'Autore- ha istituito 174 Comitati Nazionali (14 i Comitati approvati nel 2009) dedicati a personaggi importanti della nostra storia, che hanno reso grande l'Italia e che, attraverso l'impegno di tali organismi, supportati dagli uffici centrali e periferici del Ministero, sono stati celebrati e presentati ad un pubblico più vasto. Dal 2005, la Direzione Generale per le Biblioteche, gli Istituti Culturali e il Diritto d'Autore presenta e comunica all'esterno in un'azione coordinata, con il fine di rendere sempre più trasparente il proprio operato, tale importante e vasta attività culturale nell'apposito sito dedicato ai Comitati Nazionali (www.comitatinazionali.it), nell'ambito del portale internetculturale. A dieci anni dall'istituzione della Consulta dei Comitati Nazionali, l'Amministrazione ha avvertito l'esigenza di raccogliere in un volume il prodotto di questa attività imponente, al fine di rendere conto del notevole impegno profuso in termini di risorse economiche pubbliche, iniziative scientifiche e di ricerca, collegamenti e sinergie tra persone, enti e istituzioni culturali, reso grazie all'entusiasmo e alle fatiche organizzative ed intellettuali di tanti. Di alcune iniziative si è parlato molto; molte sono state coronate da un lusinghiero successo. Molte, rimaste ad uso degli studiosi e degli esperti, aprendo nuove strade alla ricerca con il conseguimento di notevoli risultati scientifici, vengono raccontate in questo volume che vuole illustrare l' azione del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali per la tutela delle memorie degli Italiani.

Contesto, attività, consumi culturali in Italia: un quadro sintetico, descritto a grandi linee attraverso dati quantitativi essenziali, che definiscono gli ambiti dell’azione del Ministero e degli altri soggetti pubblici e privati che operano per la salvaguardia del patrimonio e lo sviluppo della cultura. Il lavoro dell'Ufficio Studi del Segretariato generale, che, ogni anno, raccoglie e illustra in modo sintetico ed efficace dati di notevole interesse per conoscere la vita e le attività del Ministero per i beni e le Attività Culturali. Le cifre (che, salvo diversa indicazione, si riferiscono all'anno precedente) sono in grandissima parte attinte da fonti edite e da elaborazioni interne effettuate dall'Amministrazione. Numerosi sono gli spunti di riflessione offerti da tali cifre, soprattutto quando esse vengano affiancate e correlate ai dati sui consumi culturali. In filigrana, è agevole scorgere gli auspicabili sviluppi delle filiere economiche collegate al settore, soprattutto relativamente al turismo culturale e alle industrie culturali e creative. Comparati con quelli degli anni precedenti, i dati, se da un lato confermano il ruolo centrale ed essenziale del Ministero nella tutela e nella promozione dei beni e delle attività culturali, dall'altro mostrano che tale ruolo rischia di indebolirsi rapidamente al decrescere delle risorse e del personale disponibili.
