The hundreds of illuminated miniatures found in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, sponsored by King Alfonso X (1252–84), reveal many vistas of daily life in thirteenth century Spain. No other source provides such an encyclopedic view of all classes of medieval European society, from kings and popes to the lowest peasants. Men and women are seen farming, hunting, on pilgrimage, watching bullfights, in gambling dens, making love, tending silkworms, eating, cooking, and writing poetry, to name only a few of the human activities represented here. Combining keen observation of detail with years of experience in the field, John Keller and Annette Grant Cash bring to life a world previously little explored.

A bilingual volume that reveals an intriguing world of courtly love and satire in medieval Portugal and Spain The rich tradition of troubadour poetry in western Iberia had all but vanished from history until the discovery of several ancient cancioneiros, or songbooks, in the nineteenth century. These compendiums revealed close to 1,700 songs, or cantigas, composed by around 150 troubadours from Galicia, Portugal, and Castile in the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. In Cantigas, award-winning translator Richard Zenith presents a delightful selection of 124 of these poems in English versions that preserve the musical quality of the originals, which are featured on facing pages. By turns romantic, spiritual, ironic, misogynist, and feminist, these lyrics paint a vibrant picture of their time and place, surprising us with attitudes and behaviors that are both alien and familiar. The book includes the three major kinds of cantigas. While cantigas de amor (love poems in the voice of men) were largely inspired by the troubadour poetry of southern France, cantigas de amigo (love poems voiced by women) derived from a unique native oral tradition in which the narrator pines after her beloved, sings his praises, or mocks him. In turn, cantigas de escárnio are satiric, and sometimes outrageously obscene, lyrics whose targets include aristocrats, corrupt clergy, promiscuous women, and homosexuals. Complete with an illuminating introduction on the history of the cantigas, their poetic characteristics, and the men who composed and performed them, this engaging volume is filled with exuberant and unexpected poems.

Alfonso X (1221-84) ruled over the Crown of Castile from 1252 until his death. Known as "the Wise," he oversaw the production of a wealth of literature in his scriptorium. One of the most impressive of these literary outputs is the collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which by most counts comprises 429 songs preserved in four manuscripts. The miracle songs (or cantigas de miragre) form the focus of this book. While the Cantigas have been the subject of much scholarly attention, only a handful of studies have looked at the repertory through an interdisciplinary lens. Fewer still have probed how the Cantigas use the power of song as a communicative medium, one that functions as a social tool within the erudite environment of the Alfonsine court. This book offers a new perspective to the song collection, probing how the Cantigas use their music and text, together with rhetorical devices, to communicate with their desired audience. Author Henry T. Drummond builds upon previous methodologies, adopting a novel and holistic assessment of the songs' melodies, poetic features, and narrative logic to assess a wide selection of songs. He presents a nuanced understanding of a song form that effectively conveys its narratives to its listeners via a diverse combination of tools, embracing medieval rhetoric, rhyme-based play, and song's inherent ludic potential. Such devices, Drummond argues, allow for the Cantigas to loom large as propaganda pieces, designed to dignify Alfonso X through an elaborately devised courtly ritual.

The 13th-Century (Cantiagas de Santa Maria) were composed and set to music at the court of King Alfonso X of Castille. They were songs in praise of the Virgin Mary, composed in the Galican-Portugese language. While there has been long-standing debate over the musical notations, only recently scholors have become aware of textual problems demanding a close study of all manyscript components, paticuarly the relation between the poetry (Cobras) and music (Son). This volume consists mainly of papers given at an international colloquium held in Oxford in 1994. The meeting discussed textual, musical, palaeographical and iconographical problems of the Cantiagas de Santa Maria, questioning many views about the relationships between the manuscripts, the evolution of the collections, the source of the music and the place of the collections in relation to artistic and scriptorial developments in Europe. Contributors include: Stephen Parkinson, Manuael Pedro Ferreira, David Wulston, Mary O'Neill, Ana Dominguez Rodriguez, Susana Zapke, Valeria Bertolucci Pizzorusso, Jesus Montoya Martinez, Martha Schaffer. The cantigas de amigo were love poems of the thirteenth and fourteenth century courts of Portugal and Gallicia, in which women expressed their most intimate longings for their lovers. Although tradition makes male troubadours the authors and males the objects of desire, there is reason to believe that at least the earliest may have had female authorship, and some of the objects may also have been female. Schantz (Spanish, DeSales U.) explores these possibilities along with the incidence of patriarchy and even misogyny she finds, as well as the prevalence of the female voice in these love poems that were in direct defiance of male authority. She includes responses to the poetry by critics and a very interesting take on the confinements of courtly love. Annotation :2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
