Excerpt from Old Cape Colony: A Chronicle of Her Men and Houses From 1652 to 1806 This is not a history. It is the outcome of work begun entirely for my own pleasure, wherein I collected all the things about the Colony which interested me personally. These were, the history of the oldest farms, and the earliest settlers, Governors, and Company's men who assisted in naming the country, in drawing up its first laws, and in building its gabled houses. Some of the material- was incorporated in a Christmas number of the Cape Times of 1898, which I undertook for Mr. Edmund Garrett, then editor. Some of the drawings have been reproduced in a picture book published by Messrs. Batsford, of High Holborn. Some portions of the present book appeared as articles in Country Life, and are reproduced by kind permission. Calamity falls on houses as well as on people. Excerpt from Chronicles of Cape Commanders, or an Abstract of Original Manuscripts in the Archives of the Cape Colony II. The Capo journal. A diary, in which records of all events of importance were entered, was commenced by Mr. Van ltiebeek when he embarked at Amsterdam, and was cmntinued with only a break of an occasional day until 1808. The occurrences of each year originally formed a volume of three or four hundred pages of foolscap. By some leans between 1806 and 1830 a large proportion of these volumes disappeared from the Cape archives. For tunately. There were duplicates of most of them in the arehlvea of the Netherlands, of which copies have been preeured by the Cape government. The journal is now complete to 1788, except for the years 1675, 1688, and 1001. From 1788 to 1795 it is missing, except for 1794. Excerpt from Records of the Cape Colony, Vol. 21: From April to June 1825, Copied for the Cape Government, From the Manuscript Documents in the Public Record Office, London My Lord, - Since I had the honor of addressing your Excellency on the 26th Ultimo, Mr. Bishop Burnett has addressed another representation to my Under Secretary of State, of which I annex a copy for your Excellency's information. It appears from the documents annexed to that representation that your Excellency had directed Mr. Burnett to be prosecuted for a Memorial which he presented to You praying for a revision of certain judicial proceedings which had been adopted against him under the decision of a Commission of Circuit. In this Memorial he took occasion to make the grossest charges against the Judicial Authorities of your Excellency's Government. I am ready to admit that this was not necessary for the furtherance of his application; nor am I prepared to deny that the presenting a Memorial to your Excellency containing defamatory charges against any of the Public Authorities may be prosecuted according to the Dutch Law. But you must be aware that this is not the case according to the English Law, and in administering the Law in your Government, more particularly in what relates to the right of petitioning, the Dutch Law should be tempered by that of this Country.
