La crisi in cui versa il capitalismo democratico tiene tutti col fiato sospeso e provoca un diffuso senso di impotenza. Nel tentativo di affrontare problemi prima inimmaginabili si adottano misure che agiscono come operazioni di emergenza a cuore aperto sul mondo occidentale, eseguite senza una vera conoscenza del decorso della malattia. La situazione è così grave che ci sembra di capire sempre meno che cosa esattamente stia succedendo e in che modo si sia potuti giungere a questo punto. Wolfgang Streeck, nelle sue Adorno-Vorlesungen di Francoforte, va alla radice della presente crisi finanziaria, fiscale ed economica, che interpreta come una fase all’interno della lunga trasformazione neoliberista del capitalismo del dopoguerra, iniziata già negli anni settanta. Facendo riferimento alle teorie critiche formulate a quell’epoca, analizza in che modo sia evoluta la fondamentale tensione tra democrazia e capitalismo nel corso di quarant’anni e quali conflitti ne siano derivati tra stati, governi, elettori e interessi del capitale.
