Evil is everywhere. It surrounds us like a black stain. We try to keep it at bay with our good deeds—helping the elderly with their groceries, holding open the door to the lift—but these small acts mean little in the face of such resounding wickedness. Reese understands this better than most. He sees the darkness closing in on humanity and before he leaves the Sol System, he must make one last bid to push the darkness back. While trying to capture proof of the foul play inside the Indentured Servant program, Reese loses June to the hands of human traffickers. Now, Reese must go up against a vile plot that goes all the way to the very top of the Sol System. While Reese battles the evil around Seattle, Bit must fight her own demons lurking in the shadows of the Caprice. If they would only take on human form she could conquer them with her fists, but the longer she battles the more she realizes her issues aren’t with other crew members but with her own memories.

In Captives: How Stolen People Changed the World archaeologist Catherine M. Cameron provides an eye-opening comparative study of the profound impact that captives of warfare and raiding have had on small- scale societies through time. Cameron provides a new point of orientation for archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, and other scholars by illuminating the impact that captive-taking and enslavement have had on cultural change, with important implications for understanding the past. Focusing primarily on indigenous societies in the Americas while extending the comparative reach to include Europe, Africa, and Island Southeast Asia, Cameron draws on ethnographic, ethnohistoric, historic, and archaeological data to examine the roles that captives played in small-scale societies. In such societies, captives represented an almost universal social category consisting predominantly of women and children and constituting 10 to 50 percent of the population in a given society. Cameron demonstrates how captives brought with them new technologies, design styles, foodways, religious practices, and more, all of which changed the captor culture. This book provides a framework that will enable archaeologists to understand the scale and nature of cultural transmission by captives and it will also interest anthropologists, historians, and other scholars who study captive-taking and slavery. Cameron’s exploration of the peculiar amnesia that surrounds memories of captive-taking and enslavement around the world also establishes a connection with unmistakable contemporary relevance.

This book is concerned with the media's role in everyday life, power relations and the construction of masculine identities in the context of prisons. It is based upon unique research into the nature, impact and consequences of a situation where most prisoners in English prisons have access to some media resource, whether radio or television, or with communal or individual access to it. Captive Audience charts for the first time the way in which prisons use media in coping – or failing to cope – with the pressures of prison life, exploring the impact of the media in terms of prisoner identities, shaping power relations between prisoners and other prisoners, and in helping prisoners 'get through' a prison sentence. At the same time this book raises a range of broader issues of theory and practice on the nature of the relationship between prisons, criminal justice systems and society more generally, and on the ways in which the media are conceived in everyday life. It will be of interest to all those concerned with prisons, criminology and the criminal justice system, the social role of the media, and the construction of identity.

Perusing through this book, it is termed a masterpiece; it came at a time when the world is decaying and many believers are stranded due to afflictions of life. In a time when evil is on the increase and many yield to the yarning of the devil, whereby they knowingly or unknowingly became prey in the hand of the adversary. Therefore, it is pertinent to say that this book is a must read for every Christian. Deliverance perhaps, is the most difficult and dangerous aspect of Christian ministry, hence, it deals with rescuing the captives whether lawful or not. Rev. Canon Chima deemed it fit at this point to delve into lawful captives. Many are captives without their knowledge and they are going down spiritually on daily basis. Many Christians are suffering in the hand of the devil and without deliverance, they cannot excel. Therefore, this masterpiece x-rays the signs and symptoms of demonic presence, many ways one can become a lawful captive, and different ways one can attract curses and varying degrees of evil covenants. However, Rev. Canon Chima in this masterpiece gave assurance to all Christians that through Christ, deliverance is assured in his concerted effort to showcase the supremacy of God over Satan. Chapter one is full of assurance of deliverance from God no matter the gravity of demons, curses, captivity, and covenants one finds himself. The power of God over Satan, demons, curses, captivity, sickness, and troubles was made manifest. In chapters 2, 3, and 4, demonic presence, how one can become a lawful captive, and how people attract curses were enumerated and dealt with in details. The three chapters opened my eyes to many things I did not know. Chapters 5 and 6 x-rayed covenants, varying degrees/types of covenants, and how one can be a lawful captive through covenants. Covenants have kept many believers aback for centuries and they have prayed all kinds and manners of prayer to no avail. But, this book is an answer. I strongly believe that with this rich knowledge of the deliverance concept, there would be a diminution in the prevalence and impact of freedom for all Christians. Therefore, I regard this book as a guide to achieving the ultimate desired hope of His (God's) calling for all believers in this changing world, and I am happy to be associated with it. Rev. Onyeachulam Sylvanus Supervisor, Special Duties (SSD), Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Onitsha Zone, Anambra State, Nigeria.

The Captive Sea written by Daniel Hershenzon and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-01 with History categories.

In The Captive Sea, Daniel Hershenzon explores the entangled histories of Muslim and Christian captives—and, by extension, of the Spanish Empire, Ottoman Algiers, and Morocco—in the seventeenth century to argue that piracy, captivity, and redemption helped shape the Mediterranean as an integrated region at the social, political, and economic levels. Despite their confessional differences, the lives of captives and captors alike were connected in a political economy of ransom and communication networks shaped by Spanish, Ottoman, and Moroccan rulers; ecclesiastic institutions; Jewish, Muslim, and Christian intermediaries; and the captives themselves, as well as their kin. Hershenzon offers both a comprehensive analysis of competing projects for maritime dominance and a granular investigation of how individual lives were tragically upended by these agendas. He takes a close look at the tightly connected and ultimately failed attempts to ransom an Algerian Muslim girl sold into slavery in Livorno in 1608; the son of a Spanish marquis enslaved by pirates in Algiers and brought to Istanbul, where he converted to Islam; three Spanish Trinitarian friars detained in Algiers on the brink of their departure for Spain in the company of Christians they had redeemed; and a high-ranking Ottoman official from Alexandria, captured in 1613 by the Sicilian squadron of Spain. Examining the circulation of bodies, currency, and information in the contested Mediterranean, Hershenzon concludes that the practice of ransoming captives, a procedure meant to separate Christians from Muslims, had the unintended consequence of tightly binding Iberia to the Maghrib.
