Absorptive capacity is defined as the ability of a firm to recognize the value of new external information, assimilate it, and apply it to commercial ends. It is regarded as an important factor in both corporate innovation and general competitive advantage. My approach recognizes the practice-based character of absorptive capacity. I provide a critical review of previous empirical treatments of the construct, note the need for advancing the research in this area, and suggest a qualitative approach that focuses on knowledge absorption practices. An empirical illustration shows how a practice-based approach can provide new insights into absorptive capacity.

A case study of copper interconnect technology suggests that absorptive capacity exist in three forms: disciplinary, domain-specific and encoded. Each depends upon distinct mechanisms and organizational tradeoffs. Disciplinary absorptive capacity requires a firm to actively engage with the scientific community, while protecting domain-specific knowledge. Domain-specific absorptive capacity depends upon influencing disciplinary research at universities and consortia, then capturing domain knowledge through collaboration and hiring. As a technology develops, it becomes encoded, and absorption depends increasingly upon supplier relationships. Hence, absorptive capacity is not simply a function of prior R&D and social networks, but heavily shaped by the type and maturity of technology absorbed.

This creates a relationship that acts as a driver to innovation in both the long-term and short-term. Talented managers have proper comprehension of the importance of relationships, wherein an emotional commitment of an individual to another has the capacity to make a difference. The quality of relationship between managers and employees would have a bearing on the capacity to leverage the relationship. Employees or knowledge workers are the major sources of knowledge and are crucial to the creation, capture, as well as sharing of knowledge in business entities. There are two types of knowledge, tacit and explicit. Explicit knowledge is expressed in numbers and words and can be easily shared and communicated in form of scientific formulae, hard data, universal principles and codified procedures. Tacit knowledge, on the other hand, revolves around personal and hard to formalize knowledge, which makes it extremely difficult to share or communicate with other people. It is also to be recognized that knowledge sharing is very crucial for knowledge management systems. It can be achieved through contributions, interactions, informal techniques and communal approach. There are questions about the elements that determine the absorptive capacity of a business entity. There are three groups of factors that are assumed to determine or have a bearing on the absorptive capacity. The first group, there are the research and development activities, second category are the prior related knowledge and the individual skills, and the third are the human resource management practices and the organizational structures. A business entity’s knowledge base also comes as a basis for the performance of the company. This means that there exists a strong relationship between the skills associated with knowledge and the performance of the corporate entity. There is a relationship between absorptive capacity and knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing in business entities is a critical process that requires to be attained and developed at all times so as to attain sustainable advantage.

Zahra and George (2002) suggested a reconceptualization and extension of the construct "absorptive capacity" in order to reduce the ambiguity and diversity in empirical studies. A reading of the seminal article by Cohen and Levinthal (1990) in light of current research on learning and innovation allowed us to address several ambiguities and underdeveloped links in the proposed new definition and model of absorptive capacity. As suggested in this note, researchers and practitioners will benefit from (1) a redefinition of the first component of the construct, i.e., of "acquisition"; (2) a refinement of the explanation and links of the new component, i.e., of "transformation"; (3) clarifying the new concepts of "potential absorptive capacity" and "realized absorptive capacity" in terms of contents and contribution to value creation; (4) a further elaboration on impact of the contingent conditions of socialization mechanisms and appropriability; (5) adding a new contingent factor, power relationships (6) adding feedback loops in the model of absorptive capacity.

Over the past century, educational psychologists and researchers have posited many theories to explain how individuals learn, i.e. how they acquire, organize and deploy knowledge and skills.
