A novel theory of organizational and technological change, illustrated by an account of the development and implementation of a computer-based simulation technology. Every workday we wrestle with cumbersome and unintuitive technologies. Our response is usually "That's just the way it is." Even technology designers and workplace managers believe that certain technological changes are inevitable and that they will bring specific, unavoidable organizational changes. In this book, Paul Leonardi offers a new conceptual framework for understanding why technologies and organizations change as they do and why people think those changes had to occur as they did. He argues that technologies and the organizations in which they are developed and used are not separate entities; rather, they are made up of the same building blocks: social agency and material agency. Over time, social agency and material agency become imbricated--gradually interlocked--in ways that produce some changes we call "technological" and others we call "organizational." Drawing on a detailed field study of engineers at a U.S. auto company, Leonardi shows that as the engineers developed and used a a new computer-based simulation technology for automotive design, they chose to change how their work was organized, which then brought new changes to the technology. Each imbrication of the social and the material obscured the actors' previous choices, making the resulting technological and organizational structures appear as if they were inevitable. Leonardi suggests that treating organizing as a process of sociomaterial imbrication allows us to recognize and act on the flexibility of information technologies and to create more effective work organizations.

For more than 30 years, the government has been ramming cars into walls in an effort to make car crashes safe. The public has been conditioned to believe that seatbelts, airbags and more "crashworthy" vehicles are the best ways to protect us from harm on the roads. Meanwhile, the most basic strategies to deter dangerous driving and prevent crashes have been ignored. "It's No Accident" provides a rare glimpse into how the government got seduced by the promise of "safe crashing." It then examines the major factors involved in crashes today, including speeding, aggressive driving, distracted (e.g. cell phones) and drowsy driving. The author reveals that many dangerous behaviors are now legally PROMOTED by businesses, and that drivers who kill often walk away with just a small fine. This well-documented expose is a must-read for anyone concerned about violent death and injury on our roads and how to stop it. **Questions about this book or trouble with your order? For those who believe car crashes are unavoidable, this book is sometimes just right and sometimes a little too factual. For those who are indestructible, and accident proof this book is useful to give to others, who you know are repeatedly accident prone. While the author believes that the future of this book is an App, he also believes autonomous cars/vehicles are a huge mistake. From his personal encounters, he sees the car or pickup as an extension of the freedoms Americans have, to move unrestricted from one point to another. While this view is largely an American phenomenon, due to vastness of the country, other peoples in other countries will appreciate the attention to detail on what evidence is usually not collected by the people in vehicle accidents, but could be if ONLY.The point of the book is- If you knew you were going to need a specific photograph of something at a crash scene you would take that photo or notes. The reason you don't get that photo is you will be confronted with Your Adrenaline Spike, Angry and Hurt other people, Police and First Responders. None of them care about the evidence you may need later; their concern is the NOW.There seems to be an undercurrent of distrust of the system of police and EMS's and insurance companies. The book takes on the role of Super-Fatherly advice, to ask the accident victim to be prepared for the worst in every situation. In places, the adversarial tone comes through loud and clear, especially to those who have witnessed errors and costly mistakes made by people in authority roles. This book may not make you happy, but you will laugh at the author making his own mistakes recording the events of his recent accidents. The illustration is all too clear, that even the author would be much better off with a hard copy guide than his brain's imperfect memory. And later, when you are encouraged to subscribe to the App (in Development), you may agree with the premise that billion-dollar companies will automatically lie, if they know you can't afford a top attorney firm to represent you. Then, the hammer falls, when you realize these billion-dollar companies really are going to make and put autonomous vehicles on the same street your tax dollars paid for, that these companies will not be financially viable if they pay for every error their computers and CEO's make. The author may be reaching with some of the futurists worries, but if he is not, then you will be glad for the book and the App.The book seems to be based upon fact. If you purchased the eBook, then it is easy to reference the material he sites and decide for yourself if his understanding is accurate. For purchasers of the paperback, your ability to easily link to references is as always clunky.

Death Drive written by Stephen Bayley and has been published by Circa this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09 with Photography categories.

Cars have a talismanic quality. No other manufactured object has the same disturbing allure. More emotions are involved in cars than any other product: vanity, cupidity, greed, social competitiveness, cultural modelling. But when all this perverse promise ends in catastrophe, these same talismanic qualities acquire an extra dimension. The car crash is a defining phenomenon of popular culture. Death Drive is both an appreciative essay about the historic place of the automobile in the modern imagination and an exploration of the circumstances surrounding multiple celebrity denouements, including Isadora Duncan, Jane Mansfield, James Dean, Jackson Pollack, Princess Grace, and Helmut Newton, among many others. En route the narrative traces one very big arc - the role of the car in extending or creating the personality of a celebrity - and concludes by confronting the imminent death of the car itself. AUTHOR: Stephen Bayley recounts delightfully grotesque tales about celebrities done in by trees, by lampposts, or by nonentities in ancient Chevys. A design masterpiece, this book combines exquisite prose with stylish presentation - the cars are described more lovingly than the people who perished in them. Like a Bugatti, Death Drive recalls a time when books and cars were beautiful. SELLING POINTS: * Albert Camus once remarked that there's "nothing more absurd than to die in a car accident". That was before his car hit a tree at 80mph. Death Drive - a compendium of stories about famous people killed stupidly in cars - oozes absurdity * A Times Book of the Year, 2016 * Big names like James Dean, Jackson Pollack, and Princess Grace are among the victims 72 colour photographs

This book explains how the car, as a structure, behaves in various types of accidents. In order to understand such behaviour the special features of car structures and the elementary physics of car collisions are explained. These ideas are the applied to roll-overs, side impacts, head-on collisions, etc. The reader is then shown how accidents can be analysed. The existing international rules for the design of car structures are also studied and it soon becomes apparent that these rules are inadequate in many respects. This is probably the main reason why racing drivers survive the severest accidents but many ordinary motorists do not survive crashes at one quarter of the speed.

A morbidly fascinating and articulate collection of essays, this book explores the grim underside of America's cult of the automobile and the disturbing, frequently conspiratorial, speculations that arise whenever the car becomes the cause or the site of human death. Through analysis of fatal celebrity car accidents and other examples of death by automobile, as well as through personal memoir and forensic reports, cultural critics ponder our very human fascination with the car crash. Topics include the roles and experiences of passengers and bystanders, car crash conspiracy theories, the automobile as a site of murder, studies of car crash cinema, and psychological interpretations of the notion of the 'accident.' The book features original essays by such underground icons as Kenneth Anger and Adam Parfrey.

There Are No Accidents written by Jessie Singer and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-28 with Medical categories.

A journalist recounts the surprising history of accidents and reveals how they’ve come to define all that’s wrong with America. We hear it all the time: “Sorry, it was just an accident.” And we’ve been deeply conditioned to just accept that explanation and move on. But as Jessie Singer argues convincingly: There are no such things as accidents. The vast majority of mishaps are not random but predictable and preventable. Singer uncovers just how the term “accident” itself protects those in power and leaves the most vulnerable in harm’s way, preventing investigations, pushing off debts, blaming the victims, diluting anger, and even sparking empathy for the perpetrators. As the rate of accidental death skyrockets in America, the poor and people of color end up bearing the brunt of the violence and blame, while the powerful use the excuse of the “accident” to avoid consequences for their actions. Born of the death of her best friend, and the killer who insisted it was an accident, this book is a moving investigation of the sort of tragedies that are all too common, and all too commonly ignored. In this revelatory book, Singer tracks accidental death in America from turn of the century factories and coal mines to today’s urban highways, rural hospitals, and Superfund sites. Drawing connections between traffic accidents, accidental opioid overdoses, and accidental oil spills, Singer proves that what we call accidents are hardly random. Rather, who lives and dies by an accident in America is defined by money and power. She also presents a variety of actions we can take as individuals and as a society to stem the tide of “accidents”—saving lives and holding the guilty to account.
