The young Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) created a major stir in late-sixteenth-century Rome with the groundbreaking naturalism and highly charged emotionalism of his paintings. Il pittore classicista Nicolas Poussin, giunto a Roma quattordici anni dopo la morte di Michelangelo Merisi detto Caravaggio, lo liquidava come una sorta di anticristo: «Era venuto per distruggere la pittura». Queste parole suonano strane, oggi che basta un solo suo quadro per decretare il successo di una mostra intera, per richiamare folle di appassionati e curiosi. Eppure, la fama che aveva accompagnato la traiettoria artistica di Caravaggio in pochi anni era svanita nel nulla, e i numerosi imitatori avevano ceduto il passo ai sempre più numerosi detrattori. La sua pittura inquieta, i violenti chiaroscuri, la tensione dionisiaca della sua arte (e della sua vita) parevano incompatibili con un mondo che dai tormenti barocchi si avviava verso il rigore apollineo del Neoclassicismo. Venne cos. dimenticato, mentre le sue opere passavano di mano in mano e gli originali finivano per confondersi con le molte copie. Ma a farlo uscire da un’eclissi lunga più di due secoli fu un giovane, geniale studioso. È il 1910. Roberto Longhi ha solo vent’anni quando sceglie di dedicare a Michelangelo Merisi la sua tesi di laurea, dando inizio a un lavoro di ricostruzione che durerà decenni. Sarà lui a risolvere l’enigma sfuggente dell’artista, a ultimare L’invenzione di Caravaggio, riportandolo al centro della storia della pittura. Longhi: lo scrittore fulminante con l’avanino a fior di labbra, capace con la sua intelligenza di donare ai dipinti una seconda vita; il connaisseur dall’occhio prodigioso, in grado di riconoscere la mano del maestro in un dettaglio secondario; l’uomo dai forti contrasti, che suscita amore e odio, ammirazione e repulsione senza mezze misure, proprio come l’artista a cui più di ogni altro ha legato il suo nome. È impossibile raccontare Caravaggio senza raccontare il critico che l’ha riscoperto, e viceversa: Roberto Cotroneo costruisce così un originale ritratto bifronte, dove i conflitti tra Caravaggio e i suoi nemici riverberano in quelli tra Longhi e i suoi rivali, Bernard Berenson e Lionello Venturi, mentre le nebbie lombarde e le ombre delle taverne romane del Seicento sfumano nella quiete fiorentina della villa Il Tasso, dove il critico viveva con Anna Banti quel loro amore che, «pur tormentato, aveva ignorato la sua perfezione».
