PURPOSE Since the publication of the previous, Fifth Edition of this volume in 1991, the 'advanced' sector of the world-wide composites industry in particular, has seen many company changes in reorganisation, realignment and ownership. These changes have affected the raw material suppliers as well as those moulding the finished product. Changes in the demands of the aerospace, defence and allied industries have largely been the cause. That situation has been particularly true for those manufacturing and distributing reinforcement fibres and fabrics, necessitating this comprehensive Sixth Edition revision. However publication is also timely, because a major and important consequence is the better consideration now being given by the 'commercial' market sector, to the use - and advantages - of some of the carbon, aramid and other high-performance reinforcements, described within these pages. Although supplying at a much lower finished component cost than applies for the aerospace and defence markets, the total tonnage output answering the typically lower-performance requirements of the 'commercial' sector, is higher by many factors. Overall therefore, the summation of output tonnage and price, will continue to favour the latter. Nevertheless this 'commercial' market sector must, albeit slowly, ultimately benefit to a marked degree from an increasing technology spin-off, promoted to an extent somewhat earlier than might otherwise have been expected, by the noted changes in market place demand.

This important new handbook provides comprehensive coverage of how high performance fibres are designed and manufactured and covers their capabilities and applications. The high-modulus, high-tenacity (HM-HT) fibres fall naturally into three groups – polymer fibres such as aramids and polyethylene fibres; carbon fibres such as Kevlar; and inorganic fibres based on glass and ceramic fibres. The books shows how high performance fibres are being increasingly used for a wide range of applications including goetextiles and geomembranes and for construction and civil engineering projects as well as in specialist fibres within composite materials where their ability to fulfil demanding roles makes them an effective choice for the engineer and materials scientist. According to Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe's (1740-1832) Mineralogy and Geology, "The history of science is science." A sesquicentennial later, one may state that the history of high performance polymers is the science of these important engineering polymers. Many of the inventors of these superior materials of construction have stood on the thresholds of the new and have recounted their experiences (trials, tribulations and satisfactions) in the symposium and in their chapters in this book. Those who have not accepted the historical approach in the past, should now recognize the value of the historical viewpoint for studying new developments, such as general purpose polymers and, to a greater degree, the high performance polymers. To put polymer science into its proper perspective, its worth recalling that historically, the ages of civilization have been named according to the materials that dominated that period. First there was the Stone Age eventually followed by the Tin, Bronze, Iron and Steel Ages. Today many historians consider us living in the Age of Synthetics: Polymers, Fibers, Plastics, Elastomers, Films, Coatings, Adhesives, etc. It is also interesting to note that in the early 1980's, Lord Todd, then President of the Royal Society of Chemistry was asked what has been chemistry's biggest contribution to society. He felt that despite all the marvelous medical advances, chemistry's biggest contribution was the development of polymeri zation. Man's knowledge of polymer science is so new that Professor Herman F.

This work reviews the current computer-aided technology and manufacturing techniques utilized in the design of structures made of polymer-matrix composite materials. Currently-available microcomputer programs based on laminate theory and well-established principles for the prediciton of properties of composite materials are detailed. The benefits and limitations of specific microcomputer programs are compared.
