The Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector is responsible for about 25 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions, but can also be an important part of the solution to climate change, through adaptation and mitigation efforts. As part of its Strategy on Climate Change, FAO is developing the low carbon agricultural commodities approach , based on emission reductions along entire agricultural value chains, with tea and its business model being the first commodity to be evaluated. This report, developed in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), assesses the potential of lowcarbon and carbon neutral approaches to tea production.As the largest producer and consumer of tea in the world, China is collaborating with FAO to develop an overall framework and minimum standards for sustainable tea production. This report, based on the case studies carried in three tea fields in Southeast China, provides evidence regarding the results, impacts and achievements of the pilot conducted by the Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences (CAAS). The report develops a methodology for accounting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an estimation of the mitigation and carbon sequestration potential based on the experiences in the pilot tea gardens in China. The report also sets up the key elements of the enabling environment in order to promote the replication of the model to other countries and the base work for a potential low carbon and/or carbon neutral tea certification.

Automation has been shaping world agriculture since the early twentieth century. Motorized mechanization has brought significant benefits in terms of improved productivity, reduced drudgery and more efficient allocation of labour, but also some negative environmental impacts. More recently, a new generation of digital agricultural automation technologies has appeared, with the potential to further enhance productivity, as well as resilience, while also addressing the environmental sustainability challenges driven by past mechanization. The State of Food and Agriculture 2022 looks into the drivers of agricultural automation, including the more recent digital technologies. Based on 27 case studies, the report analyses the business case for adoption of digital automation technologies in different agricultural production systems across the world. It identifies several barriers preventing inclusive adoption of these technologies, particularly by small-scale producers. Key barriers are low digital literacy and lack of an enabling infrastructure, such as connectivity and access to electricity, in addition to financial constraints. Based on the analysis, the publication suggests policies to ensure that disadvantaged groups in developing regions can benefit from agricultural automation and that automation contributes to sustainable and resilient agrifood systems.

La mecanización motorizada ha producido importantes beneficios en lo relativo a la mejora de la productividad, la reducción del trabajo pesado y una asignación más eficiente de la mano de obra, pero también ha ocasionado algunos impactos ambientales negativos. Más recientemente, ha aparecido una nueva generación de tecnologías de automatización digital de la agricultura que ofrece posibilidades de mejorar aún más la productividad, así como la resiliencia, abordando al mismo tiempo los problemas relacionados con la sostenibilidad ambiental causadas por la mecanización en el pasado. En El estado mundial de la agricultura y la alimentación 2022 se examinan los factores determinantes de la automatización agrícola, incluidas las tecnologías digitales más recientes. Sobre la base de 27 estudios de casos, en el informe se analizan los argumentos a favor de la adopción de tecnologías de automatización digital en diferentes sistemas de producción agrícola de todo el mundo. Se señalan varios obstáculos que impiden la adopción inclusiva de estas tecnologías, especialmente por los pequeños productores. Plus récemment, des technologies numériques de nouvelle génération à l’appui de l’automatisation de l’agriculture ont fait leur apparition: elles sont en mesure de renforcer la productivité et la résilience, tout en permettant de remédier aux problèmes de durabilité environnementale que la mécanisation a posés par le passé.La Situation mondiale de l’alimentation et de l’agriculture 2022 traite des facteurs qui sous-tendent l’automatisation de l’agriculture, notamment les technologies numériques plus récentes. En se fondant sur 27 études de cas, les auteurs du rapport étudient l’intérêt économique que présente l’adoption de technologies d’automatisation numérique dans différents systèmes de production agricole du monde. Ils mettent en évidence plusieurs obstacles empêchant une adoption inclusive de ces technologies, en particulier par les petits producteurs. Outre les contraintes financières, les principaux obstacles sont les faibles compétences numériques et le manque d’infrastructures, notamment en ce qui concerne la connectivité et l’accès à l’électricité.
