Excerpt from A Biennial Retrospect of Medicine, Surgery, and Their Allied Sciences for 1867-8 Experiments upon the gases of the blood have been conducted by Ludwig and Schmidt,1 who corroborate the view generally entertained, that the carbonic acid of the blood is in part derived from the disintegration of the muscular tissue, the quantity being always greater in blood returning from muscles in action than from those at rest. Though it is probable that much of the carbonic acid of the blood is contained in solution in the liquor sanguinis, combined with the alkalies as a bicarbonate, and in union with the phosphate of soda, yet it appears from other experiments of Schmidt§ that this gas is to a certain though small extent combined with the constituents of the blood-corpuscles. Brucke maintains with Richardson that blood at ordinary temperature exhales a little ammonia. The latter author, however, has withdrawn his statement to the effect that the coagulation of the blood is dependent on the exhalation of the ammonia it contains. Excerpt from Human Physiology: Prepared With Special Reference to Students of Medicine But organs do not act each for itself: they are, as a rule, associated in the performance of a common function, and thus associated form a system. Thus the group of organs which are concerned in digestion forms the digestive system; those which together accomplish the circulation Of the blood, the circulatory system. An attempt has been made to distinguish an apparatus from a system; the former being defined as a group Of organs concerned in the performance Of a common function, no matter how dissimilar their structure, while organs similar in structure irrespective of their function would be regarded as a system. Similarity Of function, under this definition, would characterize an apparatus, and similarity Of structure a system. The organs whose functions are to digest food would be regarded as an appa ratus, constituting the digestive apparatus the bones, on the other hand, would form the osseous system. Practically, however, such a differentiation is of no use, and the two terms apparatus and system may therefore be used interchangeably. Branches Of Physiology. - From these elementary con siderations it is evident that physiology has to do with living plants and animals Only - that is, with organic structures and inci dentally with their products. That branch Of the science which treats of the functions Of plants is denominated Vegetable Physi ology, and that which deals with the functions of animals is called Animalc Physiology. Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture, Preliminary to a Course on the Institutes of Medicine: Delivered on the 9th of October, 1850, Before the Medical Class of the University of Pennsylvania The atmosphere is vitiated and contaminated in various ways. Respi ration is the most common. Accurate observations have established that from 4 to 5 per cent. Of carbonic acid is contained in the air expired by a. Male adult, and a somewhat larger per centage of oxygen has disappeared. The amount of air passing through the lungs in 124 hours, is about 400 cubic feet, which loses about 20 cubic feet of oxygen, and receives about 16 cubic feet of carbonic acid. The same air breathed three or four times becomes poisonous. One per cent. Of carbonic acid in the air, if breathed for some time, is prejudicial and death has been caused by a vitiation of not more than 12 or 15 per cent. These facts show the importance of free ventilation to the preservation of health, and the free exercise of the functions, mental and physical. Excerpt from The Southern Practitioner, Vol. 9: An Independent Monthly Journal, Devoted to Medicine and Surgery; April, 1887 In the construction of rooms horizontal space and facilities for ventilation are of much greater importance than light, due to the fact that this gas is so heavy that it seeks a low level. We believe that the United States Army regulations allow for hos pitale one thousand cubic feet of ventilated space for each indi vidual. On ships this space is necessarily much contracted; but we must remember that at sea a high per cent. Of carbonic acid gas is unknown, and also that the air is almost destitute of micro organisms. When not exceeding the normal quantity in the atmosphere, C 02 is probably innocuous, but, like dog Tray, it is always found in bad company, generally with the gases of putrefaction, so that even minute changes in the quantity of this gas may be indicative of momentous consequences. Excerpt from The Dental Register, 1871, Vol. 25 If these had been reserved for use in referring to the passage of liquids through membranous tissue, our thoughts would have been clearer. The gases obey the laws of gaseous dif fusion, just as they would, under the same physical condi tions, out of the body. When a liquid charged with carbonic acid is placed in a cylinder, and pressure is made on it by a piece of membrane stretched like a drumhead over a hollow piston, the acid escapes through the membrane. In like manner, when the venous blood, charged with carbonic acid, reaches the lungs, and the chest is expanded by the respira tory muscles, the atmosphere, with its pressure of fifteen pounds to the inch, rushes in, extends the membrane to its utmost stretch, and yielding to the pressure, the gas passes through the membrane into the cavity of the air-cell. This is simply obedience to the law of gaseous diffusion. The act of expiration by no means empties the air-cells. They are as full at its close as at the completion of the in spiration. The inhaled air has usually a temperature lower than that of the lungs. In reaching the equilibrium, it ex pands, and the pressure thus made facilitates the passage of oxygen into the blood. The oxygen is thus steadily making its ingress, while the carbonic acid passes outward mainly during the inspiration. In both there is merely obedience to the law of diffusion.
