This dissertation provides a career perspective on entrepreneurship based on the research question: "How do organizational bureaucracy and relative income affect the career choice of entrepreneurship among employees from the science and technology labor force (STLF); and what are the career outcomes in terms of returns during, and post entrepreneurship on re-entry into paid employment?" More specifically, the dissertation investigates (1) how mobility into entrepreneurship versus switching jobs is influenced by the level of bureaucracy in the organization and individual's relative income compared to similar individuals and (2) how labor market returns after a period in entrepreneurship are influenced by the duration and number of prior spells in entrepreneurship, as well as the level of bureaucracy in the employer organization prior to and after entrepreneurship. Based on a matched employer-employee dataset (1990-2008) provided by Statistics Sweden, the results suggest that organizational?bureaucracy and income inequality markedly influence an employee's career choice of entrepreneurship versus a job switch, as well the initial income and entry size in entrepreneurship. Additionally, the results indicate that the?returns from entrepreneurship on re-entry into paid employment differ based on the number of years in entrepreneurship, number of spells in entrepreneurship, the employer bureaucracy prior to entry into entrepreneurship, and employer bureaucracy on re-entry into paid employment. The dissertation contributes to the research on entrepreneurial careers, entrepreneurial entry, and the returns from entrepreneurship.

How do different sources of social influence impact the likelihood of entrepreneurship? We examine this question in the setting of an entrepreneurship class in which students were randomly assigned to receive mentorship from either an entrepreneur or a non-entrepreneur. Using two longitudinal field experiments with a pre-test/post-test design, we find that randomization to an entrepreneur mentor increases the likelihood of joining or founding a startup, particularly for students whose parents were not entrepreneurs. Performance data suggests that social influence is not encouraging “worse” entrepreneurship and may have helped students in joining or founding better-performing ventures. We contribute to the literature on social influence in entrepreneurship by examining the interaction between multiple sources of social influence and by using randomized field experiments to overcome the endogenous process of tie formation.

Sustainability holds the promise of an exciting new approach to business – one in which business goals are aligned with social and environmental goals. Multinational corporations are recognizing that we live in an increasingly resource-constrained world, and that more accountability for corporate social and environmental impacts will accrue to them. More importantly, forward-thinking executives understand that sustainability can present new opportunities for competitive advantage – whether that is by reducing costs, minimizing risk, appealing to increasingly conscientious customers, or reaching new markets entirely. With the growth of this field comes a host of interesting new career opportunities for MBAs. As companies are grappling with challenges like how to develop social return on investment (SROI) metrics or understand the potential impact of corporate carbon footprints on stock prices, there are new opportunities for the next generation of managers – managers who are not only trained in traditional MBA fundamentals but also grounded in an understanding of the multifaceted social and environmental challenges facing 21st-century global business leaders. Entirely new career paths are opening to MBAs interested in sustainability: sustainable venture capital, green marketing, corporate social responsibility management, carbon credit trading, and sustainability consulting, to name a few. Corporate social responsibility, sustainable product marketing, microfinance, green real estate development, renewable energy, and other interests all likewise fall under the sustainability umbrella at times.
