Carefully Taught looks at American history as depicted in forty Broadway musicals. Presented chronologically according to the musical timeframe, award-winning theater critic and author Cary Ginell dissects the stories, characters, and songs to not only examine how Broadway viewed historical events, epochs, and personalities, but also to capture how dramatic license separated fact from fantasy. The chosen musicals fall into a variety of categories: biographies of famous Americans, (Andrew Jackson and Fiorello LaGuardia), stories with national conflicts (Hamilton, South Pacific), events that captured the attention of the American public (Floyd Collins, Newsies), and sociological studies or satires of specific eras (The Music Man, Hair). Many books have been written about Broadway, but Carefully Taught, from the song "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" in South Pacific, uniquely approaches American history from two vantage points: the point of view of the playwright and composer accompanied with the context of how these events were seen when they were produced versus how they are seen today. Ginell’s research of contemporary theater reviews and in-depth studies of productions’ back stories play off his knowledge gained from his quarter century as a theater critic in Southern California. The combination is a complete overview of American history on the stage from the coveted balcony seat.

For his 40th published book, Klinkowitz (English, U. of Northern Iowa) details what he calls his own wasteful mis-education, the snake pit of academic politics, and the joy of teaching after he found a peaceful niche in Introduction to Literature. He does not provide an index. c. Book News Inc.

While on a summer, history research trip in 1976, Canadian William Dick finds himself dumped by his girlfriend in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. He soon meets up with Jacques Pierre Falstaff an Australian with a French-Canadian background. Falstaff is known by his friends as BS Jack and gets Bill Dick a room at the Alvermay, a seedy hotel run by Fripp, a black man raised on Fripp Island. BS Jack tells Bill and Fripp a story about how Benjamin Franklin arranged for Bills ancestors from Edinburgh, Scotland to send a fortune over to Charleston in the 1770s to help the Patriots win the revolutionary war against the British. Jack then pulls a stunt that gets Bill into trouble with the law. Fripp hides Bill at the Blue Dolphin Inn on Fripp Island. Spending days in Beaufort, Bill meets an eclectic group of characters, who together with Fripp and BS Jack search out the treasure they believe to be hidden in and around Charleston. The clues that they follow are from stories that Bills grandfather told him. A double cross, leads to a double murder in Sumter County that remains unsolved to this day.

This practical guide summarizes the principles of working with dying patients and their families as influenced by the commoner world religions and secular philosophies. It also outlines the main legal requirements to be followed by those who care for the dying following the death of the patient. The first part of the book provides a reflective introduction to the general influences of world religions on matters to do with dying, death and grief. It considers the sometimes conflicting relationships between ethics, religion, culture and personal philosophies and how these differences impact on individual cases of dying, death and loss. The second part describes the general customs and beliefs of the major religions that are encountered in hospitals, hospices, care homes and home care settings. It also includes discussion of non-religious spirituality, humanism, agnosticism and atheism. The final part outlines key socio-legal aspects of death across the UK. Death, Religion and Law provides key knowledge, discussion and reflection for dealing with the diversity of the everyday care of dying and death in different religious, secular and cultural contexts. It is an important reference for practitioners working with dying patients, their families and the bereaved.

We are energy; our bodies, as well as all matter, are merely slowed down energy. We all have an energetic body that houses all our memories and experiences of all our lifetimes. We absorb energies from our families, our previous incarnations as well as from the culture in which we live. These energies often mask who we truly are and may block us from developing our true potential. Ways to recognize and work with these imprints are at the heart of the book. The Energetic Dimension offers a new paradigm for the West as to how we function as humans. It is a paradigm that is intuitively known by us but has not to date been articulated as it has in this book. This book explores the energetic web in which we are encased, ways to cultivate its strengths, and heal and remove the negative aspects of unwanted energies. The goal is to be able to shed the layers that block us from experiencing our core essence and who we truly are.
