A true story. A love story. A sad story. A story of hope. A story of despair. This is a husband’s remembrance of the seven years he spent as a caregiver for his wife. It recalls the first halting moments of concern shared in a simple kitchen under the glare of florescent lighting. The tale unfolding on the emotionally devastating, life ending news of dementia and possible Alzheimer’s. As the couple begin their terrible journey towards the predictable conclusion the caregiver seeks to provide all that he promised her. The husband is new to the whole medical community. Family doctors, neurologists, gerontologists, and an array of ‘ists’ need to be understood, categorized, and cataloged for current and future care. He must navigate all the various state, federal, and local agencies to apply for and gain assistance in her care. The husband must ensure enough funds and monies are acquired for long-term care and support with little to no income or savings. He and his wife must adjust, finalize, and accept the change in trajectory of a life lived together for almost 50 years. Bills, mortgages, and daily life costs themselves are adjusted, discarded, and changed as the quality of a now short life has to be balanced against what was planned, hoped, and what reality can now accomplish. As both go through the irregularly timed changes in ability and memory loss the caregiver recounts past lives, hopes, and dreams of her and him. He replays their discussions on her disease, her understandings and her sense of loss. The husband recounts the loss of dignity for both her and him. But in the middle of all the sadness and chaos, moments of happiness, joy, and love are shared. In the end it is a tragic love story many have endured. One very few men have recounted. It is a story of how a man took care of his wife as she dealt with the dreadful disease of Alzheimer’s. It is a story of how he kept the promise to keep her at home until he could do so no more. It is a recounting of how he walked the path and shared her journey until its inevitable end.

Birth written by Sylvie Donna and has been published by Fresh Heart Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A book for pregnant women who would prefer to give birth with as little intervention as possible, so as to make things as good as possible for both themselves and their babies. The 'countdown' takes the reader through 10 key topics, and all discussion of issues is supplemented with birth stories and comments from all kinds of women and professionals too. The tone is practical, reassuring and even inspirational because the many positive birth stories show how it's possible to have a really happy, healthy experience of birth. Contributions come from Janet Balaskas (the woman who realised we're better off not lying down when we give birth!), Michel Odent (pioneer of water births) and Bill Bryson (the travel writer)... as well as from many other experts and 'ordinary' but extraordinary mothers, who made this book possible. The advice is based on current research evidence and in any cases where the evidence is controversial the research and relevant issues are discussed in an optional extra 'notes' section at the back of the book. There is a comprehensive Glossary of pregnancy terms and a user-friendly Index, so as to make it an optimally useful book in all sense of the word. In short, this is a handbook which could make a real difference to a pregnant woman's experience and also to that of her baby. A comment from an antenatal teacher: "What every woman will want to know, put simply and clearly." A comment from a midwife, perinatal researcher and adjunct professor (Betty-Anne Daviss): "Sylvie has created a prescription for healthy birth in a 10-step approach to keep parents focused on what is important in a potentially disastrous birth environment... She has... provided us with a book that encapsulates anything you wanted to know about keeping your birth normal and healthy..." And a comment from a mother: "Had a very late night Friday as I could not put your book down. Wow!"

This book is the product of the authors’ research and clinical practice in the field of psycho-oncology, stress, and coping for a period of over twenty years. It fills a gap that exists in the discussion of caregiver distress felt by both cancer researchers and psycho-oncologists in the vital area of predicting, acknowledging, and alleviating the distress of caregivers of cancer patients, and it focuses on the caregivers of cancer patients in various phases of the illness. The discussion of cancer-patient caregivers is divided into three aspects: theoretical (Part 1), research (Part 2), and practical (Part 3) issues. The analysis of these areas can be useful to clinicians, researchers, medical/psychological social workers, and nurses by familiarizing them with the spectrum of stresses experienced by cancer patients and their caregivers, and the coping methods that have proven most effective. Part One presents theoretical background on the structure and progression of the caregiver role and how caregivers cope with the illness as explored in recent literature. Part Two presents empirical research on caregiver psychological distress carried out by the authors during 1993-1999. Part Three examines two important issues. The first is intervention for reducing caregiver distress, and the second issue is the ethical question of caregiver involvement in the patient’s medical decisions. The book is timely, as it is felt that the issue at hand will have mounting importance and relevance to our society as it experiences growing longevity and concomitant challenges in cancer caregiving.

Pleasing Birth written by Raymond De Vries and has been published by Amsterdam University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-01-01 with Maternal health services categories.

Women have long searched for a pleasing birth—a birth with a minimum of fear and pain, in the company of supportive family, friends, and caregivers, a birth that ends with a healthy mother and baby gazing into each other's eyes. For women in the Netherlands, such a birth is defined as one at home under the care of a midwife. In a country known for its liberal approach to drugs, prostitution, and euthanasia, government support for midwife-attended home birth is perhaps its most radical policy: every other modern nation regards birth as too risky to occur outside a hospital setting. In exploring the historical, social, and cultural customs responsible for the Dutch way of birth, Raymond De Vries opens a new page in the analysis of health care and explains why maternal care reform has proven so difficult in the U.S. He carefully documents the way culture shapes the organization of health care, showing how the unique maternity care system of the Netherlands is the result of Dutch ideas about home, the family, women, the body and pain, thriftiness, heroes, and solidarity. A Pleasing Birth breaks new ground and closes gaps in our knowledge of the social and cultural foundations of health care. Offering a view into the Dutch notion of maternity care, De Vries also offers a chance of imagining how Dutch practices can reform health care in the U.S. not just for mothers and babies, but for all Americans.
