A fascinating and enlightening overview of how religious values have come to affect the practice of medicine and medical care. Most religious traditions have a rich, if largely forgotten, heritage of involvement in medical issues of life, death, and health. Religious values influence our behavior and attitudes toward sickness, sexuality, and lifestyle, to say nothing of more controversial subjects such as abortion and euthanasia. The essays in this important book illuminate the history of health and medicine within the Judeo-Christian tradition. Bringing together 20 original articles by expert scholars in the fields of the history of religion and the history of medicine, Caring and Curing provides a fascinating and enlightening overview of how religious values have come to affect the practice of medicine and medical care.

Caring written by Peta Bowden and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-28 with Philosophy categories.

In Caring, Peta Bowden extends and challenges recent debates on feminist ethics. She takes issue with accounts of the ethics of care that focus on alleged principles of caring rather than analysing caring in practice. Caring, Bowden argues, must be understood by 'working through examples'. Following this approach, Bowden explores four main caring practices: mothering, friendship, nursing and citizenship. Her analysis of the differences and similarities in these practices - their varying degrees of intimacy and reciprocity, formality and informality, vulnerability and choice - reveals the practical complexity of the ethics of care. Caring recognizes that ethical practices constantly outrun the theories that attempt to explain them, and Bowden's unique approach provides major new insights into the nature of care without resorting to indiscriminate unitary models. It will be essential reading for all those interested in ethics, gender studies, nursing and the caring professions.

Cure And Care written by Lorenzo Speranza and has been published by Sapienza Università Editrice this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-01 with Medical categories.

This volume presents some reflections on modern medicine by scholars of various disciplines. The leitmotiv of the various contributions is the focus on the dimensions of “cure” and “care”. In Italian, the term cura describes both the elimination of the cause of a disorder or disease and a combination of procedures that refer to the informal form of assistance based on elements such as attention, encouragement, support, compassion. The English language, how-ever, uses two different words to indicate the processes described above: cure and care. The first draws on the wealth of knowledge of scientific medicine and thus concerns the therapeutic methods that allow physicians to treat patients from an exclusively technical point of view; the second refers to the wealth of knowledge and practices which entail the personal involvement of the person administering the treatment with the person who is suffering.

Applied Ethics In A Troubled World written by E. Morscher and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Philosophy categories.

During the last two decades, applied ethics has not only developed into one of the most important philosophical disciplines but has also differentiated into so many subdisciplines that it is becoming increasingly difficult to survey it. A much-needed overview is provided by the eighteen contributions to this volume, in which internationally renowned experts deal with central questions of environmental ethics, bioethics and medical ethics, professional and business ethics, social, political, and legal ethics as well as with the aims and foundations of applied ethics in general. Thanks to a philosophical introduction and selected bibliographical references added to each chapter, the book is very well suited as a basis for courses in applied ethics. It is directed not only to philosophers and to ethicists from other disciplines but to scientists in general and to all people who are interested in the rational discussion of moral principles and their application to concrete problems in the sciences and in everyday life.
