This book helps pet owners fully understand what it means to care for a companion animal, from choosing a pet to veterinary visits and beyond. Pets are extremely popular in the United States. According to a recent survey, one third of American homes contain one or more cats; almost 40 percent of U.S. households include at least one dog. Pets serve as cherished companions for everyone from young children to senior citizens. However, there are responsibilities and risks involved with pet ownership, and the proper care of these animals that many consider "family" involves much more than keeping a water dish and food bowl full. This book is written by top animal health experts to explain our roles, rights, and health care challenges when bringing animals into our homes. Topics such as health, first aid, companion animal diseases, common surgeries, and alternative care for pets are all addressed. Information is also provided about pet birds, large pets such as horses, exotics such as snakes and reptiles, and "pocket pets" such as hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and rats.

Dogs have spent thousands of years as domesticated animals. The bonding of dog and man has been mutually satisfying on many levels. However, humans like you have the responsibility of taking care of your pets. Here are several tips that will help you keep your dog healthy. Do not feed your dog from the table. Feeding it from the table only reinforces begging. The dog will also be less likely to eat its normal food. Overfeeding him will lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, too. Make your dog leave the room if he begins to beg, or train him to spend mealtimes in another room entirely. Train your dog in your backyard or home, as these are safe, convenient areas. Training in busy areas with lots of people around should be avoided. It will be very distracting for your pup. Ask your vet about which foods he can eat. Sometimes, your puppy may not be developed enough to consume certain brands, as this can lead to an upset stomach or sicknesses. Always be cautious when you're thinking of feeding your dog. Whenever your dog performs a good action, such as sitting or staying, give it praise and rewards. Make your pet understand you are pleased with the behavior and expect to see it again. In this way, your dog will learn that desired behavior brings praise. Speak to your vet about your dog's eating habits. While some people feed them according to the dog food package guidelines, these guidelines can be incorrect and lead to an overweight dog. Speak with your vet and work out an appropriate eating plan for your dog. When you get a new dog, it is best that you schedule a check-up at the vet right away. Make a vet appointment right after the dog comes home. The vet is going to check over your pet to see if everything is okay, as well as set it up to get vaccinations it may need. Consider having your pup spayed or neutered as there is already an overpopulation problem. If you've been considering adopting a dog but still aren't sure, you could try to become a foster owner first. Dogs who have been abused or left without a home stay in shelters until someone adopts them. Since there are so many dogs in shelters, there are little resources. Fostering a dog will both help the cause and allow you to test drive the responsibility involved with pet ownership. Avoid matting on your dog's paws by keeping the hair on them trimmed. You should use a comb to straighten out the hair a bit before trying to trim it. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, take your pet to a groomer. Get into pet politics! Be on the lookout for any new laws that may be passed which could restrict your rights as a dog owner. Sometimes, a small number of bad dogs get more publicity than a large number of good dogs. Be sure to voice your concerns in regards to dogs and dog owners by staying in touch with local officials. As a dog owner, you need to repay your dog's affection with responsible, reliable care. Now that you know what to do, you should be prepared to do it. Start using these tips to make your dog happier and healthier. With Thanks To Nicole

Ultimate pet care refers to the comprehensive and holistic approach to caring for your pet's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves providing your pet with the highest quality of care possible, which encompasses proper nutrition, regular exercise, veterinary care, grooming and hygiene, socialization, and training. To achieve ultimate pet care, it is essential to create a safe and comfortable environment for your pet by pet-proofing your home and providing adequate shelter and bedding. Regular exercise and playtime are necessary for physical health and mental stimulation, and feeding your pet a balanced and nutritious diet is critical for overall health and well-being. In addition to physical care, ultimate pet care also includes providing your pet with proper veterinary care. This means scheduling routine check-ups, vaccinations, and preventative care to maintain your pet's health and prevent illness or injury. Grooming and hygiene are also important aspects of pet care to ensure that your pet is clean and comfortable, preventing skin irritations or infections. Training and behaviour are other key elements of ultimate pet care, as proper training and socialization can help to prevent behavioural issues such as aggression or anxiety. It is also essential to understand your pet's communication and behaviour, including body language, vocalization, and social cues, to maintain a strong and healthy bond with your pet. Overall, ultimate pet care involves taking a proactive and comprehensive approach to your pet's health and well-being, providing them with the care and attention they need to live a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.

One veterinarian's reverie on caring for our animals (and ourselves). "This book is as much a series of 'Notes to Self' as it is a guide for anyone else. I forget or ignore these little gems and need to remind myself of them almost daily. In fact, that may be our biggest struggle as modern humans: to get over our clever, sophisticated selves and act simply as nature designed us, as an interwoven and inseparable part of all life. That might just be my most important Note to Self."
