Der dritte Band der Unternehmensgeschichte der Firma Carl Zeiss in Jena dokumentiert den Zeitraum vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges bis zur Wiedervereinigung. Mit diesem Buch liegt die wechselvolle Geschichte des Unternehmens Carl Zeiss in Jena bis 1990 komplett vor. Nach dem Weltkrieg wurde das Zeiss-Werk von amerikanischen, später von sowjetischen Truppen besetzt, die den Maschinen- und Einrichtungspark nahezu vollständig demontierten. 1948 wurde das industrielle Vermögen der Carl-Zeiss- Stiftung verstaatlicht und der VEB Carl Zeiss in den folgenden Jahren in das staatsozialistische System der DDR integriert. Gleichzeitig entstanden in Westdeutschland das Zeiss-Werk und die Carl-Zeiss- Stiftung. Nach dem Wiederaufbau des Jenaer Werkes und der Rekonstruktion des traditionellen Fertigungsprogramms folgte in den sechziger und siebziger Jahren ein wesentlicher Ausbau des wissenschaftlich-technischen Potenzials und der Fertigungskapazitäten. In dieser Zeit wurde das Jenaer Werk Kern eines Kombinats für den optischen Präzisionsgerätebau. Im Ostblock war das Zeiss-Werk im optischen Präzisionsgerätebau führend. Jenaer Geräte und technologische Verfahren bestimmten den internationalen Stand mit. Das Buch schließt mit der Auflösung des Kombinates VEB Carl Zeiss JENA und der Privatisierung des VEB Carl Zeiss JENA am 29. Juni 1990

This analysis of the relationship between science and totalitarian rule in one of the most technically advanced countries in the East bloc examines professional autonomy under dictatorship and the place of technology in Communist ideology. In Cold War-era East Germany, the German tradition of science-based technology merged with a socialist system that made technological progress central to its ideology. Technology became an important part of East German socialist identity--crucial to how Communists saw their system and how citizens saw their state. In Red Prometheus, Dolores Augustine examines the relationship between a dictatorial system and the scientific and engineering communities in East Germany from the end of the Second World War through the 1980s. Drawing on newly opened archives and extensive interviews, Augustine looks in detail at individual scientists' interactions with the East German system, examining the effectiveness of their resistance against the party's totalitarian impulses. She explains why many German scientists and engineers who were deported to the Soviet Union after World War II returned to East Germany rather than defecting to the capitalist West, traces scientists' attempts to hold on to some aspects of professional autonomy, and describes challenges to their professional identity on the factory floor. Augustine examines the quality of science and technology produced under Communist rule, looking at failed research projects and clashing cultures of innovation. She looks at technological myth-building in science fiction and propaganda. She explores individual career strategies, including the role played by gender in high-tech professions, and the ways that both enterprises and individuals responded to increasing state and party control of research during the 1980s. We cannot understand the economic choices made by East Germany, Augustine argues, unless we understand the cultural values reflected in the East German belief in technology as indispensable to progress and industrial development.

This book breaks new ground, taking business history where it has only reluctantly gone in the past. The introduction reviews the small, but growing, literature, based on fresh archival materials, which investigates the history of business organisation in the Global East, or the Second World in the Cold War. It argues that there is already a great variety of approaches that go beyond the view of the Soviet-style firm as primarily a production function. Focusing on East Germany and Yugoslavia, seven chapters showcase new directions in the field, and demonstrate that the combination of business history with other historical and disciplinary approaches can help unpack the diversity of historical experiences, explain geographical variances, and offer new avenues for synthesis. The volume’s exploration of different historical eras, including those of postwar reconstruction, through globalisation, to transformation, also shows that the Global East should not be treated as disconnected from the rest of the world, but as part of wider, global trends. As such, the volume makes a plea for the utility of studying the Global East to business history and the utility of business history to the study of the Global East. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Business History.

The Communist Party dictatorships in Hungary and East Germany sought to win over the “masses” with promises of providing for ever-increasing levels of consumption. This policy—successful at the outset—in the long-term proved to be detrimental for the regimes because it shifted working class political consciousness to the right while it effectively excluded leftist alternatives from the public sphere. This book argues that this policy can provide the key to understanding of the collapse of the regimes. It examines the case studies of two large factories, Carl Zeiss Jena (East Germany) and Rába in Győr (Hungary), and demonstrates how the study of the formation of the relationship between the workers’ state and the industrial working class can offer illuminating insights into the important issue of the legitimacy (and its eventual loss) of Communist regimes.

Dazu wurden Beispiele ausgewählt, die den Kooperationsbeziehungen zwischen Hochschulen und Forschungsinstituten sowie Betrieben und Unternehmen verschiedener Branchen sowohl in der DDR als auch in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland entstammen. Der Aufbau von Vertrauen zwischen Akteuren unterschiedlicher Organisationen besitzt eine große Bedeutung dafür, ob Innovationen gelingen oder scheitern. Für die DDR zeigt sich, dass die Forschungs- und Innovationspolitik zum Scheitern verurteilt war, weil dort zivilgesellschaftliche Strukturen fehlten. In der Bundesrepublik funktionierten solche Netzwerke v.a. in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren. Die Studie leistet nicht nur einen Beitrag zur deutschen Wirtschaftsgeschichte, sondern zeigt überdies die Bedingtheit wirtschaftlichen Erfolgs durch gesamtgesellschaftliche Strukturen auf.

Die Ems-Chemie ist eines der bekanntesten Industrieunternehmen der Schweiz und der wichtigste private Arbeitgeber in Graubünden. Ursprünglich hiess sie Holzverzuckerungs A.G. und war ein Kind der Kriegswirtschaft. Mit öffentlichen Mitteln gebaut und betrieben, stellte sie Ersatztreibstoff aus Holzabfällen her. Als Benzinimporte nach dem Krieg den teuren Treibstoff überflüssig machten, räumte der Bund dem Emser Werk eine subventionierte Übergangsfrist ein. Bis 1955 musste es sich am Markt positionieren – oder dichtmachen. Die waghalsige Transformation zu einem rentablen Chemie-Unternehmen steht im Zentrum dieses Buches. Dank hartnäckiger Recherchen kann die Autorin zeigen, wie Firmengründer Werner Oswald mithilfe deutscher Berater und Spezialisten mit NS-Vergangenheit eine Kunstfaserproduktion aufbaute. Um neue Absatzmöglichkeiten für den Treibstoff zu schaffen, stieg er auch ins Waffengeschäft ein. Ingenieure aus Peenemünde, dem Geburtsort von Hitlers «Wunderwaffe» V2, entwickelten in Ems eine Rakete, andere konstruierten Zünder und Minen, während Schweizer Chemiker an einer Napalm-Variante tüftelten, die später in Kriegen in Burma, Indonesien und im Jemen eingesetzt wurde.
