L’episodio più celebre di falsificazione archeologica avvenuto in Sardegna è quello degli «idoli sardo-fenici» entrati nel Regio Museo di Cagliari poco dopo la sua fondazione del 1800 ed accreditati, nonostante una serie di dubbi e di fiere dichiarazioni di falsità, nella esposizione museale cagliaritana per ben sessantaquattro anni, sino a quando, per merito del giovane neo direttore del Museo di Cagliari, Ettore Pais, nel 1883 vennero rimossi dalle vetrine. La storia di questa falsificazione iniziò nel 1819, quando un docente di Scienze Naturali della capitale della Norvegia, Oslo (allora Christiania), il Professor Jacob Keiser, intraprese un viaggio in Italia, comprendendovi, per la prima volta tra i suoi connazionali, anche l’isola di Sardegna. Il Keiser, diffuso il proprio programma di viaggio, ricevette dal suo amico Friedrich Münter, vescovo di Sjællands (1808-1830), in Danimarca, la preghiera di svolgere in Sardegna anche ricerche nell’ambito delle antichità dell’isola, poiché il vescovo Münter, autore di un volume sulla Religion Der Karthager, non voleva farsi sfuggire l’occasione di completare la propria opera con l’esame diretto di immagini delle divinità della pressoché sconosciuta Sardegna, benché fosse stata una delle province più importanti dell’impero cartaginese. Il Keiser si imbarcò da Genova il 4 febbraio 1819 alla volta della Sardegna insieme al Capitano del Reggimento dei Granatieri di Genova Alberto Lamarmora, che intraprendeva così il suo primo viaggio in Sardegna. Ad unire i due naturalisti era in primo luogo l’ornitologia ma anche un interesse per le antichità sostanzialmente sconosciute dell’isola. In Sardegna entrambi trovarono l’affabile Direttore del Museo di Cagliari Leonard de Prunner pronto a procurare al Keiser gli idoli sardo-fenici richiesti dal vescovo Münter. Ma quei primi idoli, pretesi Ashtart e Fauno, erano – ahimé! – falsi. Né quegli idoletti del Museo cagliaritano rimasero isolati, perché, dotati di speciali qualità prolifiche, giunsero alla bella cifra di oltre trecento esemplari, tutti falsissimi. Questo libro racconta la storia della clamorosa falsificazione che coinvolse un direttore (o forse due) del museo di Cagliari, un mastro ferraio autore materiale degli idoli sardo-fenici, e forse due archeologi amici in origine del Direttore falsario e poi acerrimi nemici. Ad essere ingannati turpemente fu il gotha della scienza delle antichità europea da Eduard Gherard a Ernest Renan a Heinrich Schliemann, il Conte Alberto Lamarmora, vero sacerdote degli idoli sardi, e nientemeno che il Re Carlo Alberto, che partecipò allo scavo archeologico di Nora nel 1841 trovando una meravigliosa “idole phoenicienne”!

Scopo di questa raccolta del collettivo di ricerca "Filosofia de Logu" è quello di intraprendere una mappatura del discorso decoloniale a partire dai suoi contesti applicativi, spingendosi al di là degli orizzonti angusti e asfissianti del rapporto Sardegna-Italia per volgere lo sguardo al “mondo grande e terribile”. Ciò vale, innanzitutto, per l’utilizzo della categoria stessa di “decolonizzazione”, nella misura in cui diventa fondamentale prendere coscienza del valore specifico che essa assume a seconda del contesto applicativo. Secondo il collettivo, è proprio il Logu – inteso come il luogo nella sua materialità specifica e oggettiva, ma anche come contesto comunitario di riferimento – a caratterizzare il nostro modo di pensare e di rappresentare il mondo, ovvero la nostra filosofia.

Vita d’un direttore di museo scritta da lui medesimo è il titolo di uno scartafaccio che il curatore di questo libro, Raimondo Zucca (già Ispettore archeologo della Soprintendenza archeologica di Cagliari e Oristano, ed ora professore di Storia e Archeologia del Mediterraneo antico dell’Università di Sassari e Direttore del Museo di Oristano) dichiara di aver acquistato misteriosamente in un marché aux pouces di una Cagliari solare di tanti anni orsono. È la storia del direttore ottocentesco del Museo di Antichità dell’Università di Cagliari, Gaetano Cara, invischiato in accuse di traffici illegali di reperti archeologici, scavati con il danaro del Regno di Sardegna, e di falsificazione di circa 330 idoli sardo-fenici spartiti tra il Museo cagliaritano e la collezione privata del Re Carlo Alberto. Il curatore dell’opera è riuscito a trovare una miriade di documenti (autentici) in archivi italiani sulle storie straordinarie di questo personaggio della Cagliari del XIX secolo e tali documenti costituiscono il solido apparato critico del manoscritto Vita d’un direttore di museo scritta da lui medesimo. I 330 idoli sardo-fenici sono presentati ora nell’Antiquarium Arborense di Oristano e nel Museo archeologico di Torino nel quadro della Mostra “Carlo Alberto archeologo in Sardegna” a cura della Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Cagliari e del Comune di Oristano e dei Musei Reali di Torino.

The Emperor Augustus believed that the Roman army occupied a crucial lace at the heart of the empire and it was he who made it a fully professional force. This book looks at the structure and development of the army between the Republic and the Late Empire, examining why the army has always been accorded such a prominent position in the history of the Roman Empire, and whether that view is justified. The book is divided into three sections. The author first examines the major divisions of army organization - the legions, the auxiliary units, the fleet - and how the men were recruited.
