Carnap (1891-1970) est principalement connu en France comme le représentant typique du " positivisme logique ", le mouvement qui s'épanouit à Vienne au début des années trente : le fameux " Cercle de Vienne ". Ce mouvement est réputé pour son étroitesse d'esprit anti-métaphysique, son scientisme borné, son épistémologie anti-historique. Quel que soit le jugement qu'on portera sur la valeur des idées développées dans le Cercle de Vienne, ce sera rendre justice à Carnap que de montrer que son œuvre dépasse infiniment, par son ampleur, ses centres d'intérêt, et l'influence qu'elle a exercée sur plusieurs générations de philosophes du langage et de linguistes, le cadre étroit où l'on a prétendu l'enfermer. Signification et nécessité date de 1947. A cette date, Carnap s'est depuis douze ans installé aux Etats-Unis, après avoir fui l'Europe et la montée du nazisme. Tout donne à penser que ce livre est sorti, pour une large part, des problèmes que Quine et Carnap discutent longuement dans leur correspondance régulière de l'époque : qu'est-ce que la signification ? Est-ce même une notion légitime ? Le pessimisme théorique de Quine est bien connu ; les efforts de Carnap pour modéliser convenablement le phénomène de la signification - ce qu'on appelle en termes techniques les phénomènes d'intentionnalité, dont les modalités (nécessité, possibilité) sont un exemple - le sont moins, du moins en France. Car, outre-Atlantique, chacun sait bien que Carnap est le père de la sémantique contemporaine, qu'il s'agisse de la sémantique des mondes possibles, des grammaires formelles de Montague, ou des logiques doxastiques (pour ne citer que quelques exemples).

It is not inacurate to say that from 1928 to 1936 Carnap was a member of the Vienna Circle, even though during this period he was not always present in Vienna. During this years, which spanned roughly the period from the Aufbau to Testability and Meaning, he worked or at least discussed frequently with the members of the group. However, traditionally it has been difficult to form a proper view of the development of Carnap's ideas throughout this period, mainly because of three errors which have persisted in the commonly accepted historical interpretation of Carnap and the Vienna Circle: emphasis on the Circle as a unit rather than a collective of individuals; insistence on verificationism as the defining characteristic of Logical Positivism; and the systematic abstraction of the work of the Circle from its historical context. As against this historically distorted image, this book argues for an alternative reading, evaluating the different influences on Carnap of Schlick, Wittgenstein, Neurath and Popper, and making sense of Carnap's evolution from physicalism to phenomenalism and the syntactic point of view.
