While many books have claimed parallels between modern physics and Eastern philosophy, none have dealt with the historical influences of both Chinese traditional thought and non-mechanistic, holistic western thought on the philosophies of the scientists who developed electromagnetic field theory. In The Holistic Inspirations of Physics, R. Valentine Dusek asks: to what extent is classical field theory a product of organic and holistic philosophies and frameworks? Electromagnetic theory has been greatly influenced by holistic worldviews, Dusek posits, and he highlights three alternative scientific systems that made the development of electromagnetic theory possible: medieval Chinese science, Western Renaissance occultism, and the German romantic traditions. He situates these "alternative" approaches in their social context and background, and traces their connection with components of "accepted" physical science in relation to a number of social movements and philosophical theories. Readers will learn of specific contributions made by these alternative traditions, such as the Chinese inventing the compass and discovering the earth's magnetic field and magnetic declination. Western alchemical ideas of active forces and "occult" influences contributed to Newton's theory of gravitation force as action at a distance, rather as a result of purely mechanical collisions and contact action. Dusek also describes the extent to which women's culture supplied (often without credit) the philosophical background ideas that were absorbed into mainstream field theory.

This is the first English translation of Schelling's novel, most likely written after the death of his first wife, Caroline, the former wife of August Wilhelm Schlegel. Although only a fragment, Clara remains unique. Part novella, part philosophical tome, its central theme is the connection between this world and the next. Schelling masterfully weaves together his knowledge of animal magnetism, literary techniques, and his doctrine of the potencies to make his philosophy accessible to all. Steinkamp addresses the main issues concerning the dating of the work—many commentators have deemed Clara to be a sketch for Schelling's The Ages of the World or an outline for the third, missing book of that work—and provides a short biography of Schelling with particular emphasis on events claimed to play a role in the conception of Clara, such as the deaths of both Caroline and her daughter, Auguste. She also shows how passages in Clara are strikingly similar to the content of Schelling's touching letters mourning Caroline, written to Pauline, the daughter of Caroline's best friend and the woman who would become his second wife. Clara, strongly influenced by the Romantic movement, is an early illustration of Schelling's attempt to unite his positive and negative philosophy.

Die Entstehung von Goethes Werken in Dokumenten (EGW) ist ein großangelegtes Referenzwerk der Goetheforschung. Begründet wurde es vor mehr als fünfzig Jahren von Momme und Katharina Mommsen an der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Ostberlin. Es rekonstruiert und dokumentiert die Entstehungsgeschichte der Werke Goethes anhand aller derzeit zugänglichen Materialien. Präsentiert werden Datierungsangaben, Briefe und Tagebuchnotizen Goethes und der ihm nahestehenden Personen, Gesprächsaufzeichnungen, Bibliotheksentleihungen, Bucherwerbungen und Rechnungen. Darunter sind zahlreiche bislang kaum beachtete oder noch nicht publizierte Texte (so vor allem aus dem Bestand der Briefe an Goethe). Die in chronologischer Folge dargebotenen, nach der jeweils besten Quelle sorgfältig edierten Dokumente ermöglichen hochdifferenzierte Einblicke in die Prozesse der Werkgenese und den geistigen und lebensgeschichtlichen Kosmos, aus dem heraus Goethe seine Werke schuf. Erschlossen wird nicht allein das poetische Werk, sondern das gesamte, hier als Einheit begriffene Schaffen Goethes: dramatische, epische, autobiographische Werke; wissenschaftliche Schriften aller Fächer; Herausgabe von Zeitschriften, Briefwechseln, Werkausgaben; Projekte und verlorengegangene Schriften.
