Al comienzo de Tesis sobre el concepto de historia, el último escrito de Walter Benjamin, un muñeco llamado materialismo histórico juega al ajedrez y gana siempre, porque lo comanda una teología en forma de enano, es decir, una teología mínima donde se ha obrado, pacientemente, una reducción. La filosofía, además de conceptos y saberes, señala Mariana Dimópulos, también nos lega imágenes, y esta tal vez sea la mayor del legado de Benjamin. Desde entonces, la convivencia entre estas dos figuras –materialismo y teología– plantea una serie de incógnitas que Benjamin pensó a lo largo de toda su obra, desde sus ensayos de juventud, pasando por el libro dedicado al Barroco, hasta el Libro de los pasajes. Dimópulos se propone volver esa convivencia concebible. Para ello evita la cronología y construye en cambio su argumentación progresivamente a partir de un principio triangular. “Porque el saber del arte era al mismo tiempo un saber de la historia, y el saber de la historia un saber del presente”, sostiene. Analiza así este triángulo y las varias formas que adoptó en la obra de Benjamin frente a diversas estaciones, como en un carrusel. Ni una filosofía de la historia, ni una teoría crítica del arte, ni una rehabilitación de la mística más o menos teológica, sino sucesivas reconversiones, conceptos que avanzan en capas, por superposición.
