There are 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. All are distinct, yet remain united in their efforts to graduate men and women who are "people for others." Several factors make it challenging for each to infuse Jesuit and Catholic identity on campus today. Expert research indicates that Jesuit educators are taking necessary steps to enhance Jesuit values, but offer no guarantees that the mission will survive over time. Scholarly articles written by those who have been affiliated with Jesuit institutions show that even though many people embrace and carry out the traditions of the Society of Jesus in higher education, there are many who do not, making it more difficult for administrators to achieve their goal of enhancing Jesuit mission and identity on campus. Research points out that because there are fewer Jesuits today, schools have created a multitude of programs and courses to engage faculty, staff, and students in the mission of the institution so that they feel a sense of commitment and responsibility in promoting the ideals and values of St. Ignatius Loyola. While strides have been made in recent years to achieve this goal, evidence suggests that too many students remain uninformed about the significance and meaning of a Jesuit education. Research indicates that educators should do more to encourage their students to focus not only on their careers, but to also on making a difference in the lives of others through service, which is central to the mission of a Jesuit education.

The Vietnamese Church recently launched a mission campaign, declaring the year of 2004 as "Year of Mission." The Missonaries of Faith (MF) in Vietnam are expected to respond actively to this call by, first of all, understanding properly and carrying out ardently their specific missions which are drawn from the MF's charism. This is really a challenge given that the fusion between their former institute and the MF took place just recently - and they are now literally in the process of adaptation. In order to help facilitate this process, the researcher - as a Vietnamese member of the MF - chooses as title for this study: "The Charism of the Missionaries of Faith Shapes their Mission in Vietnam." Making use of the historical method of research, this study starts with the socio-ecclesial context of Vietnam and the historical reviews of the MF and the Verbum Dei Institute (VDI). The researcher describes the fusion of the two institutes and its consequences. This fusion calls for great efforts to adopt the new elements in the charism, spirituality, and mission of the MF, which are generated from Mission and Faith. The process of adoption and adaptation needs to be based on the contemporary theology of charism which takes roots in the Bible and in the Magisterium. The researcher goes on to discuss the basic frame of the apostolic mission of the MF from the perspective of contextualization. The primary means of doing these missions and the consequences for the formation program are also identified. The entire process is all about understanding and living charism, which is first of all a free gift of the Holy Spirit for the good of the Church; therefore, the entire process must be put under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and in the Mystical Body of Christ.

Charism is a hot contemporary issue. The growing interest in the charisms is one of the significant religious developments of our time. Opinions on charisms vary to a remarkable degree. Unfortunately, in some cases, diverse viewpoints have led to confusion among Christians. On the positive side though, this developing interest in charisms has contributed to spiritual renewal and stimulated biblical research in this most important area of the Church's life. The exponential growth of the Charismatic/Pentecostal Movement throughout the world and especially in Africa urged led to choice of this topic on charisms. In the Charismatic/Pentecostal Movements the issue of charisms is very vital and extremely important. It is at the centre of its spirituality and practice. This Movement has spread to almost all major Christian confessions/denominations and continues to attract many followers. This work is unique among the many studies written on the charisms. Even though the subject of charisms has received some scholarly attention, most have not delved into the role of the charisms in the Church from Pauline perspective as this study does. The following observations and reasons demonstrate that it is still meaningful and worthwhile to study charisms in Pauline letters.

This book was written to help me understand what the "fruits and the gifts of the Holy Spirit" are and what they were supposed to mean to me, and how to use them in my life. The more that I discovered and shared with others, the more that I understood that I was to share this knowledge with all who have this same hunger. The "fruits of the Holy Spirit" given to us as a grace from God in our baptism are what molds us into the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). The "fruits" are the personality of Jesus when He lived on earth. Jesus gives us the example-with His very life! It is important for us to be fruitful and multiply physically for life to carry on, but it is spiritual fruitfulness that will change the world! We each have an intricate role to fill-whether single, married, laity, religious, man, woman, child, adult-God created each of us for a specific purpose. And He gives us the tools to do our work! They are the gifts of the Holy Spirit that are listed in (Isaiah11:2-3). The most known charismatic gifts are listed in (1 Corinthians chapters 12-14), but this is not all there is. "To each one is given a manifestation of the spirit for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7). When we use a charism to help another person, our Isaiah "gifts" come forward within us, and as that happens the fruits of the Holy Spirit pour out of us as a grace from God, that is how we share the love of God with another. God doesn't make cookie cutter Christians! He tailor-makes each individual for a special ministry to help our Church grow! Can you believe it? God wants us to fulfill a portion of His plan designed to bring all people to eternity with Him! Writing this book has helped me understand the simplicity of how the fruits, gifts, and charisms work together to build up the kingdom of God.

The rapid growth of the charismatic renewal in the Catholic Church has brought with it both controversy and confusion, and it has raised a number of important theological questions. Is it an authentic renewal movement? Exactly what is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? How should we understand the gift of tongues? What is prophecy? Does God really heal by supernatural means? One by one, Francis Sullivan takes up these controversial points in one of the most thorough theological investigations yet undertaken into the Catholic charismatic renewal. 'Charisms and Charismatic Renewal' is a scholarly analysis of this dynamic renewal movement for those who want to know more about its history, its theological and scriptural bases, its present impact on the church, and its probable future course.

In the world of screen culture, teachers are unfailingly represented as charismatic figures, able to tackle the deprivations their students face and to form special relationships with them that none of their staff colleagues can. But how realistic are such representations, and-- more importantly - what do real world teachers think about their reel world counterparts? This book takes a closer look at the charismatic teacher as portrayed in films such as Blackboard Jungle, "To Sir, With Love" and "Dead Poets Society" and in television series such as Teachers. It considers the eccentric, resilient or romantic - but always charismatic- teacher in inner city schools, private or public schools and contrasts them with the views of practising teachers. "Carry on Teachers" will be essential to media and cultural studies courses but is designed as much for teachers and those coming into the profession.
