A carta que Pero Vaz de Caminha escreveu ao aportar na Ilha de Vera Cruz, comunicando ao rei de Portugal o descobrimento do Brasil, é considerada a certidão de nascimento do nosso país. Na carta, é descrito o relevo da "nova ilha", assim como a primeira missa feita no Novo Mundo e o primeiro escambo realizado entre os portugueses e os índios. Datado de 1o de maio de 1500, e enviado de Porto Seguro, Bahia, o texto ficou arquivado no Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, em Lisboa, para ser redescoberto apenas 200 anos depois. Sua primeira publicação no Brasil foi em 1817, pelo padre Manuel Aires de Casal, em sua Corografia Brasílica.
