¿Qué importancia tienen los espacios en la historia? Sin duda hay un lugar en que realizamos nuestro trabajo, disfrutamos nuestros momentos de ocio y de descanso o convivimos con amigos, parientes y colegas. Los historiadores reconocemos la necesidad de situar los acontecimientos que reseñamos en el sitio que les corresponde, pero tenemos el compromiso de definirlo por algo más que unos límites geográficos, ya que un mismo contorno territorial puede acoger, según el momento y la voluntad de sus ocupantes, una escuela o una cárcel, un lugar de culto o un burdel, un taller o un arsenal... Pero además hay épocas en que los seres humanos se sienten más o menos cómodos en determinados espacios, buscan identificarse con el que corresponde a su ámbito cultural, y si no lo encuentran lo crean. Cuando hablamos de cultura nos referimos a todo aquello que es expresión de la conducta humana. Por lo tanto, los espacios sociales son creados o modificados por individuos y comunidades, con su inseparable carga de creencias y costumbres, de tal modo que se puedan identificar los valores que predominan, las aspiraciones de quienes los habitan, las rutinas de comunicación y los derroteros de superación o retroceso en las relaciones de convivencia. Por eso más que de territorios, en este libro hablamos de espacios culturales, sociales y afectivos.

Cartography in the European Enlightenment, the highly anticipated fourth volume, offers a comprehensive overview of the cartographic practices of Europeans, Russians, and the Ottomans, both at home and in overseas territories, from 1650 to 1800. The social and intellectual changes that swept Enlightenment Europe also transformed many of its mapmaking practices. A new emphasis on geometric principles gave rise to improved tools for measuring and mapping the world, even as large-scale cartographic projects became possible under the aegis of powerful states. Yet older mapping practices persisted: Enlightenment cartography encompassed a wide variety of processes for making, circulating, and using maps of different types.
