A obra pretende traçar um percurso que atravessa as principais linhas de força da produção do Espírito Santo nestes últimos 40 anos, iniciando com as experiências pioneiras em videoinstalação, videoarte, videodança e videoperformance, entre o final dos anos 70 e meados dos 80. Já nas duas décadas seguintes, essa produção se consolidou e se expandiu por outros eixos, como o filme-dispositivo, o filme-ensaio, o found footage e o filme de artista. Por fim, nos últimos dez anos, o retorno à performance e à corporeidade dividiu espaço com trabalhos mais ensaísticos, especialmente em primeira pessoa. Longe de propor um levantamento exaustivo e totalizante da produção capixaba de caráter experimental, a ideia deste livro é tentar evidenciar caminhos, de modo a levantar questões acerca de como essa produção dialoga com os percursos empreendidos pelo vídeo no Brasil e no mundo. Sobre o autor Erly Vieira Jr (1977) é roteirista, diretor, curador e pesquisador em audiovisual. Doutor em Comunicação e Cultura pela UFRJ e pós-doutorando em Cinema pela UFF, é Professor do Departamento de Comunicação Social e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação e Territorialidades (POSCOM) da UFES. Atua na área audiovisual desde 1998, tendo sido contemplado quatro vezes nos editais de desenvolvimento de projetos audiovisuais da Secult-ES como roteirista, destacando-se a série de documentários Transversais (2017, em fase de captação de recursos), e o longa-metragem Presença (2015, em produção). Realizou dez curtas-metragens, entre ficções e documentários, exibidos em diversos festivais nacionais e estrangeiros. Com o curta Macabéia, recebeu os prêmios de Melhor curta-metragem 16 mm, Melhor Roteiro e Melhor Atriz no 29º. Festival de Gramado (2001). É autor dos livros Marcus Vinícius – A presença do mundo em mim (2016), Plano Geral – Panorama histórico do cinema e vídeo no Espírito Santo (2015), Realismo sensório no cinema contemporâneo (Edufes, no prelo) e Exercícios do olhar (Ed. Cousa, no prelo), além de vários artigos publicados em livros e revistas acadêmicos. Desde 2012, é um dos curadores do Festival Cinema de Vitória e, em 2018, participou da comissão de seleção de longas-metragens do 51º. Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro. Atualmente, prepara sua estreia no longa-metragem como diretor e roteirista do documentário Presença, produzido pela Ladart Produções.

In 1770, the slave Esperança Garcia bravely penned a letter to the governor of Piauí state, in Brazil, describing how she and her children were being mistreated and requesting permission to return to the farm where the rest of her family was living. Before she wrote her letter, Esperança Garcia lived on a cotton farm run by Jesuit priests, where she learned to read and write — a rare opportunity for a woman, especially a slave. But one day she was separated from her husband and older children and taken with her two little ones to be a cook in the home of Captain Antonio Vieira de Couto, where she and the other slaves were beaten and denied even the freedom to attend church. In despair, Esperança Garcia wrote to the governor about her terrible situation, asking if she and her young children could return to the farm. She waited each day for a reply, never giving up hope. And although she never received an answer, she is remembered today for being the courageous slave who wrote the first letter of appeal in Afro-Brazilian Brazil. Commemorating the date of the letter’s discovery, September 6th has become Black Consciousness Day in Piauí state. Beautifully illustrated, this moving picture book provides a very personal look at the tragic history of slavery in the Americas.
