Os treze opúsculos aqui reunidos e apresentados por Leandro Teodoro, com uma rara competência, concernem à pastoral destinada aos simples cristãos do final da Idade Média. Aos homens e mulheres que passavam por "rudes" – a maior parte era iletrada, o clero deveria ensinar os Evangelhos, os Dez Mandamentos, a maneira de evita r a tentação dos vícios e do pecado, a assistência requerida dos bons fiéis na missa, a obrigação de se confessarem ao menos uma vez por ano e, em geral, os bons costumes. Todas as coisas que os catecismos – O Catecismo Romano em particular – retomaram sistematicamente ao se inspirarem, entre outros, nesses modestos opúsculos. Os livretos portugueses, manuscritos e depois impressos, confirmam que, desde o século XIII, "o povo cristão" havia se tornado o foco das preocupações de clérigos. Mas há um paradoxo nesses opúsculos: contrariamente ao que se poderia esperar, eles não foram, em sua maioria, obras de bispos, nem de curas, nem mesmo de ordens mendicantes, franciscana ou dominicana, especializadas na pregação ao povo, mas de monges cistercienses de Alcobaça, em princípio dedicados às orações e à contemplação. O seu papel surpreendente nessa literatura catequética nascente confirma o prestígio intelectual do mosteiro alcobacense no reino português daqueles tempos. Mais amplamente, lembra a já antiga participação dos monges brancos no desenvolvimento da literatura de sermões e exempla, cuja influência irradiou para muito além dos claustros. Demonstra, enfim, a importância, no final da Idade Média, de um fenômeno cultural novo e importante: a tradução das línguas nacionais entre si, em particular do francês e do castelhano para o português.

This volume explores the subject of religious conversion over broad expanses of time and space, considering cases from the thirteenth through the twentieth centuries and from settings across the world. Leading scholars from a variety of historical sub-fields address the theme at a moment when the utility of the concept of conversion is vigorously debated. The historical settings treated here stretch from thirteenth-century England to sixteenth-century southern India and Andean Peru, from Bohemia to China during the age of the Reformations, from the fifteenth-century Low Countries to seventeenth-century New France and from the nineteenth-century Minnesota borderlands to late colonial Zimbabwe and modern India.
