Cass Gilbert was both a creator of distinguished buildings and a leader in elevating the architectural profession. An early proponent of skyscrapers, Gilbert is responsible for the Woolworth Building, numerous museums and libraries as well as the United State Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. and the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in New York City. His legacy endures and there now is renewed appreciation of his ability to unify technology with artistry in civic and commercial architecture. While Gilbert's work has been studied in depth, in this book Charles Pankenier considers the architect as a personality. He relates the forces that shaped the man and the final quarter century of his life as the owner of Ridgefield's "Cannon Ball House," the period that coincided with Gilbert's professional maturity and culminating period of accomplishment. In 1900 when Gilbert purchased the Keller Tavern as his summer home in Ridgefield, Connecticut, the architect immediately become one of the most celebrated residents of a community that had long attracted individuals recognized for their accomplishments in business and the arts. When Gilbert died in 1934, the London Times wrote: "The list of his most important buildings would only be long enough to prove him the most remarkable architect of his generation in America." Illustrated with black & white photographs. Author: Charles Pankenier is a longtime docent at Keeler Tavern Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut, at one time Cass Gilbert's Cannon Ball House. There, he joins with other guides to interpret the property's 300-year history, together with the lives of the remarkable people who give it contemporary meaning. Pankenier is also the author of "Ridgefield Fights the Civil War."

Ridgefield has long been a destination-for tourists seeking a picturesque country village, for city dwellers looking for a weekend and summer retreat, and for immigrants in search of a new life. In the first half of the twentieth century, a period that corresponded to the heyday of the picture postcard, hundreds of views were published, depicting the beautiful Main Street, the many inns and resorts, the mansions, estates, village shops, churches, and scenic hills and lakes. Ridgefield: 1900-1950 offers more than two hundred of these glimpses of a bygone time of affluence and change-what one historian has called Ridgefield's golden era.

In Ridgefield, a cannonball remains lodged in the side of an old tavern, evidence of the Battle of Ridgefield fought here during the Revolutionary War. The town's history dates back to 1708, when two dozen settlers from Norwalk purchased the land from the Ramapoo Indians. Founders carved Ridgefield from the wilderness, and members of the Congregational Church designed its wide, beautiful Main Street. In the mid-1800s, families immigrated from Ireland; in the late nineteenth century, New Yorkers discovered Ridgefield to be an ideal summer place. As the town developed, Italian stonemasons and other workers arrived to build roads and sewer lines. Ridgefield has been the home of two Connecticut governors, and of celebrities from the arts, sports, and entertainment fields. Stone walls still abound in Ridgefield, and the road that once roared with cannon fire ranks as one of the state's most beautiful streets.

Books about the national capital are always in order. Those written almost one hundred years ago might already be out of date, as regards many significant features of the city's growth and development. But Mr. Robert Shackleton, after an extended experience in describing such cities as New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago, has at last written a comprehensive "Book of Washington"—not a guide or handbook merely, but an intelligent summary and review of the past and present attractions of the city.
