On trouve à l’origine de cette étude un problème très général lié à la réception théorique des productions artistiques. Faut-il dégager de l’œuvre l’essence idéale, pour la réduire à ce qui, en elle, est universel ? Faut-il plutôt décrire les conditions qui l’ont rendue possible ? Tenter de répondre à ces questions – dont la simplicité n’est qu’apparente – engagera ici la philosophie autant que l’histoire de l’art. Sans verser pour autant dans la naïveté œcuménique, on valorisera ici les zones de contamination méthodologique entre ces deux champs de savoir. On se demandera si le théoricien n’est pas toujours et inévitablement tendu entre deux approches de l’objet culturel : celle de la méthode historique qui tient compte de la temporalité propre à l’objet étudié (son origine, sa contingence, sa fin – c’est-à-dire tous les processus d’apparition, de disparition ou de survivance) et celle de la méthode transcendantale ou apriorique qui fait émerger ce que l’objet porte de non-historique, de non-factice, de non-empirique (sa vérité, son sens, sa structure, son universalité). Partant de ce problème général, l’analyse portera sur trois projets théoriques réalisés dans les années 1920 et restés déterminants pour la théorie de l’art actuelle : l’Atlas Mnemosyne (Aby Warburg), La philosophie des formes symboliques (Ernst Cassirer) et La perspective comme forme symbolique (Erwin Panofsky). Ausgangspunkt dieser Untersuchung ist ein sehr allgemeines Problem, das mit der theoretischen Rezeption von Kunstwerken zusammenhängt. Soll die geistige Essenz des Werkes herausgearbeitet werden, um es auf das zurückzuführen, was an ihm universell ist? Oder sollen eher die Bedingungen beschrieben werden, dem es seine Entstehung verdankt? Die Verfasserin nimmt sich vor, diese nur auf den ersten Blick einfachen Fragen im Rekurs auf die Kunstgeschichte wie auch die Philosophie zu beantworten. Ohne in naives Konsensdenken zu verfallen, sollen hier Zonen ins Licht gerückt werden, in denen die beiden Wissenskulturen einander methodologisch berühren. Aus dieser Herangehensweise ergibt sich die Frage, ob der Theoretiker nicht zwangsläufig in einer unauflösbaren Spannung zwischen zwei Weisen der Annäherung an das Kulturobjekt verharren muss: einerseits der historischen Methode, die die Zeitlichkeit des untersuchten Objekts betrachtet (seine Herkunft, seine Kontingenz, seinen Zweck, d.h. alle Prozesse des Auftretens, Verschwindens oder Nachlebens), und andererseits der transzendentalen bzw. apriorischen Methode, die das im Objekt enthaltene Nicht-Historische, Nicht-Faktische, Nicht-Empirische hervortreten lässt (seine Wahrheit, seinen Sinn, seine Struktur, seine Universalität). Von diesem allgemeinen Problem ausgehend, behandelt die Analyse drei theoretische Entwürfe, die in den 1920er Jahren entstanden sind und die für die kunsttheoretische Debatte bis heute bestimmend sind: den Mnemosyne-Atlas (Aby Warburg), die Philosophie der symbolischen Formen (Ernst Cassirer) und Die Perspektive als symbolische Form (Erwin Panofsky).

No one has been more influential in the contemporary practice of art history than Erwin Panofsky, yet many of his early seminal papers remain virtually unknown to art historians. As a result, Michael Ann Holly maintains, art historians today do not have access to the full range of methodological considerations and possibilities that Panofsky's thought offers, and they often remain unaware of the significant role art history played in the development of modern humanistic thought. Placing Panofsky's theoretical work first in the context of the major historical paradigms generated by Hegel, Burckhardt, and Dilthey, Holly shows how these paradigms themselves became the grounds for creative controversy among Panofsky's predecessors--Riegl, Wölfflin, Warburg, and Dvorák, among others. She also discusses how Panofsky's struggle with the terms and concepts of neo-Kantianism produced in his work remarkable parallels with the philosophy of Ernst Cassirer. Aby Warburg (1896-1929) was the scion of M. M. Warburg & CO the German Jewish banking empire. At thirteen, he made a pact with the youngest brother, by which he granted his birthright in exchange for the promise that the sibling would purchase for him every book he would desire. It is thus that the famous Warburg Library was born. During a long trip in Italy, as a young man, Warburg falls in love with Italian Renaissance and starts to accumulate all related texts. Once back home, in Hamburg, he further develops the nucleus of the library with volumes concerning unique and original disciplines, from Magic to Astrology, from Alchemy to Primitive Civilizations. Placed in a newly built, perfectly round library Warburg organizes the order of the volumes following his theory of "migration of symbols". With the explosion of the First World War, Warburg's mental equilibrium collapses and he is hospitalized in a Swiss psychiatric institution where he will remain for more than ten years. The second part of the book continues when Warburg's disciple, Fritz Saxl, takes his place as director of what had become the famous Warburg Institute. On the night of December 12, 1933, with the help of a few assistants, Saxl with an heroic effort transported the entire library of over a hundred thousand volumes onto two small steamships and flees to London. The Warburg Institute, founded in the 1920s in Hamburg by art and cultural historian Aby Warburg, is a pioneering institution that has greatly shaped the fields of art, myth, religion, medicine, philosophy, and intellectual history.
