In writing this brief history of Catalan literature, I have tried to bear in mind the needs of the non-specialist reader with some knowledge of Spanish who wishes to know more about an important but, on the whole, neglected area of Peninsular culture. Where English readers are concerned, the task, unfortunately, is long overdue: in a recent and otherwise excellent literary encyclopedia, the whole of Catalan literature is allotted the same amount of space as Jean-Paul Sartre, and this seems characteristic of a situation which few specialists as yet have tried to alter. The chief barrier, of course, is linguistic: yet it is not difficult to acquire at least a reading knowledge of Catalan, and for reasons which are given in Chapter 1, the older literature is relatively accessible to a modern reader compared, say, with that of France or Spain. This accessibility gives an impression of coherence to the entire range of Catalan literature which is reinforced to a great extent by social and historical tendencies. Roughly speaking, Catalan literature follows a recognizable European pattern, with one notable exception: the fact that its course is interrupted for something like three centuries by what is usually known as the period of "Decadence" (see Chapter 2). To see why this should be so demands an awareness of certain historical facts, and these in turn point to the close interpenetration of literature and society which is evident in most phases of Catalan culture. Both the 19th-century revival and the more conscious programs of noucentisme in the 20th are attempts to create a new national identity, a task which has lost none of its urgency in the years since the Spanish Civil War. - Preface.

This book studies the emergence, in the late 1960s and 1970s, of a sophisticated body of gay fiction in Catalan, and examines the relation between the representation of homosexuality and the discourses on national identity that legitimate modern Catalan literature. Gay fiction, argues the author, reveals a tension between the nation and the body in Catalan literature: Catalonia is a nation different from Spain, a cultural and political minority within Europe; but the existence of sexual minorities within its boundaries reveals its inner complexity, which resists homogenization. Catalonia is another country in more ways than one. Drawing on a variety of critical discourses (gay theory, psychoanalysis, and authors such as Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, and Bourdieu), Another Country explores the intertwinings of identity, cultural politics, and desire in the work of Terenci Moix, Lluis Fernandez, Biel Mesquida, and Lluis Maria Todo. The book analyses how gay writers renegotiate identity discourses in Catalan literature in order to introduce homosexuality into them, often with destabilising effects. The role of gay authors in the process of canon construction (a crucial aspect of contemporary cultural nationalism in Catalonia) is also considered, focusing on postmodernism and the divide between high and mass culture. Finally, Another Country addresses the interplay of homosexual desire within the frame of a distinction between perversion and transgression, and proposes an alliance between queer and nationalist discourses.

Since 1714 Catalan culture has had a troubled relationship with the Spanish state, which sometimes tolerated and sometimes repressed it. Nevertheless Catalan writing experienced a renaissance in the 1830s, and by the turn of the century had formed bridges with wider European culture through Modernisme. Under the banner of Noucentisme's call to order, Catalan writing became institutionalised in the early 20th century, only to become a culture of resistance or exile again under the dictatorships of Primo de Rivera and Franco. After 1939, as after 1714, new forms of narrative only gradually emerged from a time of crisis, but led ultimately to a great blossoming of Catalan fiction after Spain's transition into democracy and membership of the European Union. This invaluable volume applies a range of theoretical perspectives to the work of modern and contemporary Catalan writers, from Narcís Oller (1846-1930) to leading women writers such as Caterina Albert (1869-1966) and Mercè Rodoreda (1908-83) and to some of the postmodern masters - authors who, though valued by their fellow novelists across Europe, are still too little known outside Catalonia. Since it emergence in the 19th century in response to feudalism, nationalism has been a mixed blessing. Originally seen as a positive force, often enough it has resulted in warfare and persecution of minorities, so much so that, over time, it has been considered a social evil whose apparent decline has been greeted as a positive development. The author disputes this or rather, he maintains that the picture that emerges is more complex: nationalism is not disappearing but has taken on a different form. What we are experiencing is an increasing autonomy of ethnonations, i.e. nations without a state, in the wake of a weakening of the multinational states and the transfer of their sovereignty upwards, in the case of Europe to the federation of the European Union, and downwards to the "ethnonations." Catalonia is the major case study in this book but it is embedded in a comprehensive theoretical framework as well as the historical and contemporary reality of Europe, opening up a new perspective. The author, one of the foremost scholars in this field, brilliantly succeeds in developing an original, clear and comprehensive vision of nationalism that is accessible to a wide readership.
