L’oggetto del presente studio si inserisce nel percorso di analisi storiografica medico chirurgica che interessa proprio il periodo immediatamente precedente l’attivazione del grande Civico Ospedale triestino. Questo volume risulta pregevole per molteplici aspetti. Il primo è quello di aver riscoperto e messa in luce l’attività di una famiglia di dentisti tedeschi operanti nel nostro Paese: i Bettmann. Il secondo di aver contestualizzato il tutto in un periodo particolarmente complesso della storia odontoiatrica italiana, vale a dire quello della progressiva seppur difficile affermazione storica della disciplina, sia da un punto di vista scientifico che professionale, avviatasi con la promulgazione del Decreto Boselli (1890). Il terzo è quello di aver evidenziato, partendo dalle pubblicazioni, seppur scarne, dell’epoca relative all’Odontostomatologia, l’azione divulgativa che taluni Autori cercarono di compiere, in un periodo in cui le discipline odontoiatriche erano neglette. Il volume si apre con una approfondita panoramica sulla situazione politico-legislativa del neonato Regno d’Italia: dal fatto che la Legge Casati non contemplasse provvedimenti per la formazione e la professione odontoiatrica, sino al Decreto Boselli, pietra miliare, seppur non completamente risolutiva per la definizione di un professionista odontoiatrico. Non vengono sottaciuti poi il ruolo delle donne di tale famiglia, anche in campo odontoiatrico e la grave difficoltà proveniente dalle persecuzioni contro gli Ebrei, di cui furono vittime alcuni dei Bettmann. Il volume si conclude con una interessante appendice, dove sono riportati per extenso i testi dei Decreti legge riguardanti l’Odontoiatria dal 1890 in avanti. Dalla prefazione di Paolo Zampetti

Il mondo ebraico di lingua italiana a cavallo dei secoli XIX e XX, seppure con tutte le sue contraddizioni e le sue limitazioni, affrontò temi di grande rilevanza etica, rituale, pratica, simbolica, organizzativa, tradizionale. Quello della destinazione del corpo dopo la morte era uno di questi. Per quanto sia stato possibile alle nostre deboli forze, abbiamo cercato di esercitare la nostra analisi sempre in termini di acribia. Prima di mandare alle stampe il nostro lavoro, qual piccioletta barca, abbiamo molto esitato, consci della delicatezza del tema che andavamo ad affrontare.

L’interesse degli storici della medicina per la mano è sempre stato elevato, anche nel nostro paese: possiamo ricordare un numero monografico della Rivista CIBA1 dedicato all’argomento già nel 19472 . All’analisi delle forme e della morfologia della mano seguiva quella simbolica e patognomonica; il rapporto con il lavoro era affrontato a partire dall’età moderna e dall’opera di Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714); infine, non poteva mancare l’analisi della presenza della mano nelle arti figurative. Fra le caratteristiche dei fascicoli dell’edizione italiana della Rivista CIBA erano di particolare rilievo le Note complementari, redatte prevalentemente da Luigi Belloni. Nel fascicolo dedicato alla mano, fra le altre, una nota è dedicata all’aracnodattilia3 . Siamo dunque autorizzati a proporre un’analisi del tema inserendoci in un autorevole percorso storiografico. I contributi presentati in questo volume si rivolgono non solo alle persone interessate al tema, ma anche ai giovani professionisti sanitari in formazione (siano essi futuri medici o futuri professionisti di altre discipline)

Originally published in 1963, and today considered a landmark in twentieth century Italian literature, Luigi Meneghello’s Deliver Us is the memoir, not of an extraordinary childhood, but of the very ordinary one the author shared with most of his generation, when Italy was a rural country under the twin authorities of Church and Fascism. His boyhood begins in 1922, the year of Mussolini’s March on Rome, and ends when Meneghello, 21, goes up into the hills to join the partisans.
