En la vida cotidiana de la Universidad de Salamanca en la Edad Moderna está latente una constante preocupación por los aspectos protocolarios, celebrativos y rituales. De modo particular, en el siglo dieciocho se manifiesta con especial fuerza el deseo de dotar a las celebraciones religiosas en la Real Capilla de San Jerónimo del decoro inherente. La música, que se había convertido en un elemento indispensable del ritual católico5, contribuye a la grave solemnidad de estas funciones. Pero además asume un papel protagonista en los procedimientos ostentativos que, con la excusa de pretender aquélla, se ponen en marcha en una universidad que, a lo largo del setecientos, ansía mostrarse y demostrarse ante los otros organismos locales, ante la monarquía e incluso ante sí misma. La consideración del fondo (serie documental que se extiende entre 1735 y 1818 aproximadamente) de partituras vinculado a la Capilla de San Jerónimo que se conserva en la Universidad de Salamanca como un archivo musical, exigiría definir cuál es el elemento que dota al mismo de una interrelación cohesiva y unificadora, en definitiva, de un carácter orgánico.

This study explores the composition and performance of liturgical music in El Escorial, from its founding by Philip II in 1563 to the death of Charles II in 1700. Philip II promoted within his monastery-palace a musical foundation whose dual function as royal chapel and as monastery in the service of a Counter-Reformation monarch was unique. The study traces the ways in which music styles and practices responded to the changing functions of the institution. Perceived notions about Spanish royal musical patronage are challenged, musical manuscripts are scrutinized, biographical details of hundreds of musicians are uncovered, and musical practices are examined. Additionally, two important choral pieces are printed here for the first time.
