Hurting people hurt people, but love changes that. Alana was an accomplished professional and a loving wife and mother. But despite seeming to have it all, she still struggled with the pain and brokenness from her childhood. Just a few months before her high-school graduation, Alana's mother was murdered. Despite her agony, she persevered through college, storing up her pain in her closet. When the grief became too much to bear, she would retreat to her closet to cry. This method of self-preservation carried her through the rigor of an engineering degree and the start of a successful career. But when she remarried and became an instant mom to three young boys, she realized just how important her healing and wholeness were. After a series of breakthroughs, she had an encounter with God in the closet that changed her perspective on her life's hurts and solidified her faith in her Redeemer. Chronic pain affects 1 in 3 Americans and exerts more than a $600-billion drain on the economy annually. It is the largest invisible epidemic in the land. Having treated thousands of patients with chronic pain-often when they were at their most vulnerable-Lynn R. Webster, M.D., continues to believe there is hope. Ultimately, a cure for pain will require more research, better therapies, and improved policies. But healing can begin today with a broad-based approach to treatment, including compassionate support from those closest to the ones who are hurting. The Painful Truth is an intimate collection of stories about people living with disabling pain, their attempts to heal, and the challenges that we collectively face in helping them live meaningful lives. As a physician who has treated people with chronic pain for more than thirty years, Dr. Webster reveals the difficulties that patients face in dealing with chronic pain in a society that is often shamefully prejudiced against those who are most in need of our empathy. He shares how such biases also affect medical professionals who treat patients with chronic pain.

Pain written by Keith Wailoo and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-15 with Political Science categories.

Pain touches sensitive nerves in American liberalism, conservatism, and political life. In this history of American political culture, Keith Wailoo examines how pain has defined the line between liberals and conservatives from just after World War II to the present. From disabling pain to end-of-life pain to fetal pain, the battle over whose pain is real and who deserves relief has created stark ideological divisions at the bedside, in politics, and in the courts. Beginning with the return of soldiers after World War II and fierce medical and political disagreements about whether pain constitutes a true disability, Wailoo explores the 1960s rise of an expansive liberal pain standard along with the emerging conviction that subjective pain was real, disabling, and compensable. These concepts were attacked during the Reagan era, when a conservative backlash led to diminished disability aid and an expanding role of courts as arbiters in the politicized struggle to define pain. New fronts in pain politics opened nationwide as advocates for death with dignity insisted that end-of-life pain warranted full relief, while the religious right mobilized around fetal pain. The book ends with the 2003 OxyContin arrest of conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, a cautionary tale about deregulation and the widening gaps between the overmedicated and the undertreated.
