Excerpt from The Cathedral Towns and Intervening Places of England, Ireland, and Scotland: A Description of Cities, Cathedrals, Lakes, Mountains, Ruins and Watering-Places The articles having been published in narrative style, it has been thought well to present them again in that form and the authors wish to say by way of apology, if one be needed, that the opinions and criticisms expressed are such as impressed their own minds, and are not reflections of the minds of others. With this explanation, and craving the indulgence and patience of the reader, they send forth their volume. Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. I desire to express my grateful thanks to all who have kindly assisted in the preparation of this work, to the deans and canons-in-residence who have often guided me by their counsel during my study of their cathedrals, and also to the vergers who have readily afforded me much valuable help. More especially do I wish to thank the Deans of Lincoln, Ely, Chester and Gloucester, Canon Tristram of Durham, Bishop Anson of Lichfield, and Archdeacon Richardson of Southwell, for their courtesy and kindly interest. I have also to record my obligations to the work of many previous writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales This new, or at least freshened, knowledge has undoubtedly added much to the interest with which all ecclesiological students regard this most graceful Of English cathedrals. Nor is it a knowledge Of the fabric alone, Of its architectural character and change, that has increased during the progress Of these works. Modern science and modern scholar ship have advanced with gigantic strides, and such a connection has been established between their various branches as has thrown new light in all directions where it was scarcely to be hoped for, and from quarters whence it was scarcely expected. Of course there are those who tell us that the whole Of Lich field Cathedral has been too completely rejuvenated, and that it has lost the venerable rust which carried us back to the days of the great mediaeval architects. But in truth the aerugo was Of no real high antiquity. It is the roman-cement and compo', the whitewash the lath and plaster, and the carpenter's Gothic woodwork of the later Georgian epoch which have been removed; and we can now recognise, far more distinctly than before was possible, the grace and beauty of the original work. Excerpt from Handbook to the Cathedrals of England: Saint Paul's There seems evidence, not to be contested, that on this eminence was a Roman praetorian camp to defend and to command the rising city below. That a B0 man temple should stand beside, or in the neighbour hood of, the strong military position, is no great demand on our belief. In height and strength no eminence, in what was then London, could compare with the spacious esplanade on which St. Paul's stands. Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales: Being a Fourth Edition of English Cathedrals Illustrated The book has been re-illustrated in a much more comprehensive manner, only a few examples of detail being retained from the earlier editions. The exception of the ground plans, the illustrations are from photographs, the sources of which are given in the note of acknowledgment. The more important features of each cathedral are represented, and it is hoped that this will tend materially to elucidate and increase the interest of the text: neither the text, however, nor the illustrations are intended as a sub stitute for personal study of the cathedrals on the spot, which it is the purpose of the book to foster and facilitate. Excerpt from The Cathedrals of the United Kingdom: Their History, Architecture, Monuments, and Traditions With Short Notes of the Chief Objects of Interest in Each Cathedral City and a Popular Introduction to Church Architecture The bright work stood still, And might of its own beauty have been proud, But it was fashioned, and to God was vowed, By virtues that diffused in every part Spirit Divine, through forms of human art. Faith had her arch, her arch, when winds blew loud, Into the consciousness of safety thrilled; And Love her towers of dread foundation laid Under the graves of things; Hope had her spire Star high, and pointed still to something higher. Istian architecture is antagonistic to pagan art it is spiritual rather than intellectual. The Italian style is a miserable compromise between the Gothic and Classic style, applied to ecclesiastical buildings. In place of a cold monotonous uniformity of plan, and stationary orders, Gothic art is progressive, and may yet be capable of further development on the noblest principles of construction; it is irregular, for every part is designed for use, and orna ment is subservient to the highest purposes. Size is produced not only by magnitude but by the multiplication of parts. Vertical and aspiring, there are neither heavy horizontal lines, nor a confused combination of disjointed members independent of each other; every part grows out of that next to it, or is its continuation, typifying, from base to roof, Him, Who is at once the rock, the chief corner-stone, and a covert from the storm and a shadow from the heat, and the Temple of the Great City (rev.
