The story of one of the truly great female rulers in history by an award winning historian. The daughter of an impoverished aristocrat, Catherine was married aged 16 to Grand Duke Peter, heir to the throne of all the Russias, a feckless teenager with a weakness for drink. Catherine was only able to give him an heir by passing off her lover's son as his own. In 1762, Catherine rode out of St Petersburg at the head of an army to arrest her husband. Three months later she became sole empress of the largest empire on earth. She was 33 years old. She ruled Russia as a benevolent autocrat for 34 years, fighting the Turks abroad and rebellion at home, and shepherding her people through the upheavals of the French Revolution. She took on many lovers but gave her heart to General Potemkin, the foremost statesman of her time. She died in 1796 aged 67, revered by her people as 'our mother', praised by Voltaire as a philosopher, reviled by her enemies as the Messalina of the North and remembered in history as Catherine the Great. From this extraordinary life of great events, fabulous splendour and barbaric cruelty, Robert K. Massie has woven a thrilling narrative based on impeccable scholarship and a cinematic eye for detail.

Major General John Fulton Reynolds was destined to become one of the most famous officers of America's Civil War. He was greatly admired and respected by the men he commanded and by the men who commanded him. President Abraham Lincoln even wanted Reynolds to lead his vast Army of the Potomac. Fate, however, had different plans for the general. He was shot and killed on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, taking with him a secret so deep, not even his close family members knew about it. The secret was discovered only when his body was being prepared for burial. Mysterious objects were found hanging from small chains around his neck. It turns out General Reynolds, who was stern, aloof, and highly principled, had a hidden love affair with a woman much younger than him. Why they had kept their love so private is embroiled with the intrigue of an era driven by war and prejudice so intense, it split the country apart. Their story of true love found and tragically lost is the story of a nation trying to find purpose and meaning among unbridled hatred and bigotry. A Woman S Kingdom written by Michelle Lamarche Marrese and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-05 with History categories.

In A Woman's Kingdom, Michelle Lamarche Marrese explores the development of Russian noblewomen's unusual property rights. In contrast to women in Western Europe, who could not control their assets during marriage until the second half of the nineteenth century, married women in Russia enjoyed the right to alienate and manage their fortunes beginning in 1753. Marrese traces the extension of noblewomen's right to property and places this story in the broader context of the evolution of private property in Russia before the Great Reforms of the 1860s. Historians have often dismissed women's property rights as meaningless. In the patriarchal society of Imperial Russia, a married woman could neither work nor travel without her husband's permission, and divorce was all but unattainable. Yet, through a detailed analysis of women's property rights from the Petrine era through the abolition of serfdom in 1861, Marrese demonstrates the significance of noblewomen's proprietary power. She concludes that Russian noblewomen were unique not only for the range of property rights available to them, but also for the active exercise of their legal prerogatives.A remarkably broad source base provides a solid foundation for Marrese's conclusions. These sources comprise more than eight thousand transactions from notarial records documenting a variety of property transfers, property disputes brought to the Senate, noble family papers, and a vast memoir literature. A Woman's Kingdom stands as a masterful challenge to the existing, androcentric view of noble society in Russia before Emancipation.
